Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 20-02-2013 #369 - Roberta Flack - Killing Me Softly With His Song - 1973 running recap for me - 3's=72, 2's=50, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Killing Me Softly Written by Norman Gimbel, Charles Fox Produced by Joel Dorn Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK, #1 Canada the players: Roberta Flack - vocal other people playing things Inspired by a Don McLean gig? That's what it says. Folk singer Lori Lieberman was the attendee who took the idea to the eventual writers that came up with it. Lori was the first to record it and it was then heard by Roberta who took it to the top. Helen Reddy was offered the song but delayed any decision until it was too late. Prior to the recording of the song Roberta was the opening act at a Marvin Gaye concert and performed it for the first time. Marvin told her to hit the studio with it. She won three grammys for it including Song Of The Year. The Fugees took the song back to the top of the charts 22 years later with Lauryn Hill doing the vocal performance. Like most of the early genre, I always have a problem with the lyrics. No deep thinking involved here. I can only guess what a mojo is. Hearing this while touring with Ann Cole, Muddy decided to make it his own, and his stepped up version became the standard. Recognized by the National Endowment for the Arts as a recording of the century. Copyright litigation ensued once Muddy's version became popular. Settled out of court when the two record labels involved probably realized they didn't have any money anyway. Got my mojo working Got my mojo working Got my mojo working Got my mojo working Got my mojo working, but it - uh uh - just won't work on you Looking Back At Some Classics - Music Head - 22-02-2013 #367 - Martha And The Vandellas - Nowhere To Run - 1965 running recap for me - 3's=73, 2's=51, 1's=10 this one - *** from the album: Dance Party Written by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Eddie Holland Produced by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier Chart action: #8 US, #26 UK the players: Martha Reeves - lead vocal Rosalind Ashford - backing vocals Betty Kelly - backing vocals Funk Brothers - the music Mary Wells missed a session date and Martha Reeves filled in. A Star is born. This wasn't the first hit but that's how she broke in to the music biz. This one is from the girls third album. Much used for sporting events and a troop favorite in the Vietnam war. On the US side I would think. Actually the commies had all kinds of places to hide. I think we lost.
