Battle of the music genres - Nick - 17-12-2014 Music by definition is something with a melody, some genres of what is considered music by today's standards cannot, in their purest form, be considered music. If one were to ask what the BEST genre is, it would be a matter of opinion, just as if asking what someones favorite genre is. If we were to take a look at what makes a good artist, a good song, and good music, you would find that the best artists have both talent and honesty in their music. Folk and country are two vastly different genres that share roots in the blues, at their very heart you will find as Willie Nelson once put it "three chords and the truth", that is what makes good music. A good song doesn't need a killer lead guitar line to be good, or outstanding vocals, it needs the truth, it needs to mean something to both the artist and the audience. Eric Clapton has been immortalized by his songs "Layla" (written for George Harrison's wife at the time) and "Tears in Heaven" (written for his two year old son Connor who fell out a window to his death) these songs MEAN SOMETHING, when "Tears in Heaven" plays the room falls silent- no matter where you are. Sure, everyone loves a good Rock'n'Roll song, but to say that Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" is a better song than Alan Jackson's "Where Were You? (When the World Stopped Turning)" would be more than an incorrect statement, it would be a musical crime. There is no "Best Genre" of music, there's only good music and bad music, a very good friend of mine once told me that "good music makes you feel something, no matter what emotion it makes you feel, if it's good you'll feel it". Battle of the music genres - SteveO - 18-12-2014 I chose the Rock & Metal category for the sake of clicking one. Being a child of the sixties, it was the predominant genre along with soul/funk. However there are many great songs and artists in all of the other categories. I really can't choose one genre that I can call my favourite. I am all over the entire music spectrum. You are spot on with your post, Nick! To each his or her own! Battle of the music genres - jazzboCR - 18-12-2014 I'm baffled that this Thread exists and that it's gone on so long. It's only a battle for those who can only hold one idea in their head at a time. And besides, it's what's in your head at any given moment that counts--that's why Sirius/XM has so many channels and my ride has 6 programmable buttons. Little minds contemplating their navels...my, my... BTW 28 votes tells the tale? When was the last time this poll was run? I'll bet 90+% turnover since '08. Soul and funk get zero votes--how "white-bread" is that? Battle of the music genres - SteveO - 18-12-2014 "Being a child of the sixties, it was the predominant genre along with soul/funk"...lol...a close second! hard to choose ONE genre...in fact I really don't understand how one can stick to one genre with all the great music past and present available???? mile: I , as stated, clicked one genre for the hail of it..that's all. There was no category for "all genres"...the term "other" doesn't cover it!jazzboCR Wrote:I'm baffled that this Thread exists and that it's gone on so long. Battle of the music genres - PetSounds - 18-12-2014 I picked World and other, because there was no psychedelic option, which, although a lot of it can be classified under the umbrella of rock, really deserves its own category. Although, I listen to most genres. |
