Although MacArthur Park is the song for which he is remembered, I used to have the second album on vinyl and I think overall it is superior to the first. The first album is a collection of very nice songs, but only one that I consider outstanding, and it's the obvious one. The second album feels more like a structured album; for example the closing track morphs very cleverly into a reprise of the title track.

I guess you either like Richard Harris's operatic style or you don't. Personally I think he absolutely nailed those songs, and whenever I hear them done by someone else, such as Art Garfunkel or even by Jimmy Webb himself, I find myself comparing it unfavourably to the Harris version.

Worst track:
Lucky Me (but it's not actually bad, I just find the song a little puerile)

If you're not going to follow the link to listen to it, at least check the playlist. The first half of the program is Christmas-themed - but it's sure not the stuff you normally hear at this time of year!

Somewhere in that lot is "Little Saint Nick" by The Beach Boys. Ye gods, they made even the most ordinary song sound magical. Right from the opening bars I knew who it was, even though I don't think I have ever heard that particular BB song before.

You probably knew the Beach Boys did a Christmas album, but did you know the Turtles did a Christmas song? Or Paul Revere and the Raiders also did a Christmas album?

back to the Knopfler album "privateering"....no surprise its a superb album...
I cant think of one single dud album he has made, hell, I even love his instrumental songs
and as you guys know, im not a big fan of instrumental music on the whole.
BTW, I own all of Dire Straits albums and most of his solo work and my least favourite of his
catalogue is DS' second album "communique", don't ask me why it is my least favourite because I have no idea
its just the last one I would go for out of his albums.

^^ I also thought Communique was a comparatively weak album. It starts well with "Once Upon a Time In the West", but the rest of side 1 I find quite dull. Side 2 is an improvement; in particular I like the two final songs, which I always think of as a pair. Overall however it sounds as though they had a bunch of songs left over from the sessions for the debut album.

They redeemed themselves with "Making Movies", and even more so with "Love Over Gold."

Do listen to that podcast CH. I sometimes get the feeling I post stuff here and no one links to it. If you need further encouragement there is an Elvis song in there. Not a very good one IMO, but you might like it.

shows the potential they were capable of but it wasn't quite there yet...
a few different styles there, I guess they were still searching for their distinctive sound...
of all nine studio set I currently own by the band this is the only one that has tracks I do not like...
but at the same time, theres a few classics on it also...
