What Are You Reading ? - MAG2NYC - 28-06-2014 jazzboCR Wrote:The current The Atlantic magazine has a fascinating article on the very different folks who just happen to make magic together. They use Lennon-McCartney as the prime examples. " The Power of 2" Must read for Beatles fans (you know who you are): http://www.theatlantic.com/features/archive/2014/06/the-power-of-two/372289/ This is a great article, jazzboCR! It really did a good job of illustrating how John and Paul *needed* each other in order to create the music they did, and I'd not read a lot about their backgrounds, so that was informative. I've always thought that in order to hit some kind of center, there have to be extremes. It's not a particularly original thought, but it seems to be one that I consistently point out to people who argue extremes. *laughs* Thank you for pointing me to this article, jazzbo!! I'm wondering if they actually will step in, jazzbo. The EDM industry is a $6 billion industry with major corporate sponsors, and after looking at a 1996 NIH study about drug and alcohol use at rock concerts, it doesn't appear that much has changed with regard to alcohol/drug usage at concerts. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8669733 My guess is that the media will make a big fuss over this, but it will be swept under the rug when EDM events are offered to cities/venues. A riveting read. The sound of money.... Smart cookie - money talks. Unfortunately, it tends to say the wrong things. What Are You Reading ? - Music Head - 30-06-2014 Richard A. Clarke - Against All Enemies - 2004 ![]() Headed various departments under the 3 presidents on the cover. Resigned under the last Bush over the Iraq war, then wrote this insiders view of the war on terror. About the first 2/3's of the book were pretty interesting. Then came the Bush bashing. Every decision that was made was wrong. All well and good. A lot of the criticism is warranted. So easy to see mistakes that were made after the fact. Has nothing but praise for policies under Clinton. Go figure that after his resignation he shows up as a regular on all the MSNBC talking head shows. If you enjoy Bush bashing, read this. A view of Bush's first term from a Fox news analyst. Have to be fair and balanced, right? As an educator, I completely agree with the assertion that coding is the language of the 21st century and that in the next decade it will become part of the core curriculum. What do you IT folks think about this? http://www.motherjones.com/media/2014/06/computer-science-programming-code-diversity-sexism-education What Are You Reading ? - LMD - 12-07-2014 Way too much time on the train ride to and from work this Summer, so I finally made the plunge and tried an e-book. ![]() "Power, Passion, and Beauty: The Story of the Legendary Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Walter Kolosky Speaking strictly from a writing standpoint, its not anything special. The organization is kind of weird, there's way too many exclamation points for my liking, it comes across like a high schooler wrote it. But, in terms of what's in there? Kolosky scoured the Earth and has a ton of info. Its a really enjoyable read in that sense. So long as you like the Mahavishnu Orchestra. If you don't, you probably won't care to read it (which should be kind of obvious anyway).
