HINDU LOVE GODS  "hindu love gods"  vinyl 1990

a birthday gift from Lynne
this was a Record Store Day "35th anniversary first time on vinyl since 1990, 180g LP" re-release
so,
this is Warren Zevon on vocals and REM his backing band.
it was recorded in '87 when Zevon/REM were recording his "sentimental hygiene" album
its a covers album, mainly old blues tunes with a couple of contemporary tunes thrown in
its guitar driven and heavy and it scores an impressive 2.4 from meaning
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

love this one:  Walkin' Blues

a cool cover of the Prince classic:

IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS "laughter" cd 1980

their third studio album of nine, i own them all
its in 'rock' because it is called "pub rock"
typical Dury sounding album
has the saxaphones, a 'nutty-ska' feel, lots of cockney rhyming slang and innuendos
album scores 2.1 from meaning
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

not for everyone but i like it:

IAN DURY  "the bus driver's prayer and other stories" cd 1992

his seventh, nineth overall, i own nine
most of the Blockheads appear on here but one was pushing up daisies and another had retired
hailed as being a return to form lyrically and musically by the UK music press and i tend to agree
not that theres anything overtly wrong with some previous albums, this just seems more complete
theres the usual songs about life, love and the things he sees around him
interesting to note theres a song about pollution but its dont in a humorous way so it does not sound preachy
all up the album scores 2.4 from me which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

his dancehall/vaudeville pollution song

I took a sudden notion
To go down to the ocean
I'd got my sun-tan lotion
My flippers and my mask
In proper distribution
Of fully-formed ablutions
Formed an ocean of pollution
In which I daredn't bask

Some turds were teeny-tiny
And some were big and shiny
But they all fucked up the briney
In which I dipped my toe
If you go swimming in the shite-us
You'll get worse than dermititis
From the sea of grey detritus
Where the sewage ebbs and flows

There's no respite
From the cess-pit
No shelter from the pong
The poor old ocean
Is full of motions
Where the hell did we go wrong?

 might also
Like a lamb off to the slaughter
Pored myself a glass of water
I failed to spot I'd caught a
Little creature in my cup
I was well and truly bolleaux-ed
From the fires of hell that followed
T'was the cup of life I'd swallowed
And it almost did me up

Something coming
Through the plumbing
That should not be there at all
The glass is brimming
And things are swimming
And quite frankly, I'm appalled

I was a very hungry fella
I defrosted my paella
Came down with Salmonella
Three weeks intensive care
They failed to send technicians in
To check the air-conditioning
Which was unfortunately transmissioning
A case of Legionnaires

There's a malaise
In the mayonnaise
There's a poo-poo in the prawn
Where we missed them
In the system
Little germs are being born
There's no respite
From the cess-pit
There's no shelter from the pong

Where the hell did we go wrong?

BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "born in the u.s.a"  cd/vinyl 1984

a random pick from The Boss pile...
his seventh of twenty-one, i own them all
heartland rock here
30 million in sales, 7 hit singles
we all know it and love it, ranks as a top-3 from his career for me
album scores 2.7 which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

excellent live version:

ROY ORBISON  "the essential roy orbison" cd 2006

a 40 track double disk career spanning compilation
absolute class from the get-go IMO through to the late 1980s tracks
nothing to dislike, like some but love most of this
album scores around 2.8 which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

lets go for this one on this occasion:

[Image: 250px-VenusandMarsalbumcover.jpg?utm_sou...=thumbnail]

WINGS  "venus and mars"  cd/vinyl  1975

a revisit
their fourth studio album but sixth post-Beatle album for Paul
i actually prefer this over Band On The Run
solid rock album and a top 3 or 4 from his solo career for me
album scores 2.6 which means
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

LUPIN HOWL  "the bar at the end of the world" cd 2002

from the UK
rock band
i know nothing about them and Wiki has little info
from a discount bin several years ago and never posted it on MD
most of it is good but it does have filler IMO
album scores 1.8 which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite track:

PAUL McCARTNEY  "choba b cccp" aka "the russian album"  cd/vinyl 1988

his fifteenth post-Beatles album
a covers album of 1950s rockers,
originally released in Russia only on the Melodia label
then the fans realised they could offer Russki's big money to sell outside Russia
Macca then decided to release it worldwide to stop profiteering
so i have a Melodia LP and an EMI-Parlophone copy and the cd
look, its not a bad covers album as far as covers go but im not a big covers album fan
this one scores 1.8 from me which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite:

OASIS  "dont believe the truth"  cd  2005

a revisit
their sixth of seven, i own them all
some really good songs on here and some average material too
looking at their discography this one would rank 3rd for me
but its a long way behind my two favourites and with a score of 2.1
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite, the Kinks influenced one:

ROLLING STONES  "let it bleed"  cd 1969

a revisit
their eighth of twenty five, i own about half of them
okay, so its basically an acoustic album, slightly folky and slightly country for the most part
i just dont "get it" but i know i should as i usually love their acoustic tunes
the fascination with this one is beyond me sadly
like two of the tracks and love one, disliking seven which scores 1.4 and means
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
