What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 23-12-2012 Right you are my friend ! Excellent comments....I think Jazz and Classical do not require a track by track analysis ...they speak for themselves! Music Head Wrote:from my library (cd) What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-01-2013 ![]() nina simone "lady blue" cd,1987 part of a 2cd set, i did the best of studio disc some time ago, this is the bonus live disc that accompanied that best of set.... wasnt too keen on the studio one, from memory it was a borderline like/dislike album, but this one fares a bit better probably because i feel blues and jazz seems to work better in a live setting than in the sterile environment of a studio...you see, blues and jazz is all about 'feel and emotion' IMO, something that rarely comes across unless it is live. this one has fifteen tracks, sounds as though they are tracks from several decades of recordings rather than a complete concert experience...a couple of the early tracks on the disc sound ore like b-grade bootleg recordings, sure they have their charm but the quality of the sound isnt there, it gets better as the disc rolls along thus the better marks towards the end... i like this disc, great music for playing whilst driving the car, good relaxing material IMO showing what a great talented artist Nina actually was, on one of the tracks she actually mentions Michael Jackson in a passing comment,so im assuming this to have been recorded around his 'thriller' days when he ruled the pop world without peer, so if that is the case, she could still sing the blues really well right into the latter stages of her great career... i could only find a couple of live performances of these tracks, i cannot post studio versions as it is,afterall, a live set...and at least my favourite track is one of those to be linked to youtube! I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: aint got no/i got life best track: mississippi goddam tracks: 1. house of the rising sun ** 2. dont let me be missunderstood ** 3. aint got no/i got life * 4. no opportunity neccessary,no experience needed ** 5. young gifted and black *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XyEvMpFLrE live 6. aint no use ** 7. after youve gone ** 8. the assignment song ** 9. gin house blues ** 10. do what you gotta do ** 11.mississippi goddam *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MiaSXO9--OA live 12.seeline woman *** 13.the other woman *** 14.four women ** 15.i sing just to know im alive ** 3s=4 2s=9 1s=2 rating: 2.1 or 7/10 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 03-01-2013 ^^ like the Mississippi song I know it's not supposed to be happy but she could at least smile when it's over What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 03-01-2013 have you heard the Black saint and Sinner Lady album MH ? Steve's third album, saw him on "later...with jools" in that year and was impressed with his style so i bought the album... Steve started off by getting plucked off the streets where he lived as a hobo/busker apparently when some music executive heard him playing his own brand of "folk/blues" and the rest is history... mainly blues things happening here on this one, mostly good, nothing great and only a couple of dud tracks herewithin and they are the last three, i guess the album wore a bit thin by that time(well, thats all i can put it down to anyway!) great little story teller IMO which suits the folk/blues style immensely, look, not a great vocalist by any means but has the 'feel' for it, and to cap it off "just like a king" was co-written with Nick Cave and Grinderman play on the track with Cave supplying duet vocals also. I LIKE THIS ALBUM worst track: one true best track: thunderbird or the title track(cant make up my mind??) tracks: 1. i started out with nothin'... ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=113FzU6Uf9U live 2. walkin' man ** 3. st.louis slim ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9VjLVkLHSkw live 4. happy man ** 5. prospect lane ** 6. thunderbird ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuM3FKfrFs4 live 7. fly by night ** 8. just like a king ** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OObYh6lsQNg audio 9. one true * 10.chiggers * 11.my youth * 3s=0 2s=8 1s=3 rating: 1.7 or 5.6/10 What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 10-01-2013 ^^ best track: thunderbird or the title track(cant make up my mind??) that was just a trick to get me to listen to both of them It worked preferred Thunderbird probably because of the drums plus me and my buds used to drink Thunderbird (it was the cheapest we could get) What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 10-01-2013 LOL mate...no trick, genuinely couldnt decide when i went back and replayed both of them... |
