What Are You Listening To? - Jardine - 18-03-2010

The Envoy is one of my favourite songs!

What Are You Listening To? - gryphon - 18-03-2010

I think that there are one or two albums that have the power to make you think that the surreal or something like it could be possible:
This is one of them: I have always loved the TV program “The Twilight Zone” and believe that the Album “Love” would fit in to the series as follows :
Scene One
George Martin, and his son Giles have just arrived at George’s London Home ( Did you know, that George lives in a converted church building , at one end is George’s living accommodation and at the other is a recording studio , which lives in the translucent image of the light from one of the former church’s stained glass windows.? What an atmosphere in which to record!!!) George and Giles have been in deep conversation about how George worked with The Beatles and how the recording barriers of the time were stretched and broken : each time the five of them met to start on a new album........................Giles has listened with intense interest, as George has relived his stories and has added comments about if only they had had 21st century recording technology then, what would the end result have sounded like?....................The conversations had gone on , until George Martin remembers that he has an appointment at Abby Road in about thirty minutes and, invites Giles along so that he can see the place...................The scene ends with both of them taking a taxi to Abbey Road , leaving the cab, and walking towards the doors of the building............................
Scene Two takes us back in time, to the last full Beatles recording session. They are just putting the finishing touches to a few tracks on Abbey Road and the atmosphere though tense, is thoughtful too.............they realise that this is a special time in history; they will not work together again in the same studio on a Beatles album.... and each Beatle is secretly feeling that in a way, they wish that there could one day be the chance to work together again. However, as the last few moments tick away, they realise that it could never be.............................They finish the last few pieces of work needed on the album and then all four get ready to leave. They head to the outer door and get ready to go. Just as they get to the door .....time freezes............ and they are locked in a time travel tunnel, at the other end are George and Giles Martin from the future and the Beatles from the last days of the sixties........As they meet.........Rod Serling appears and goes through the open sequence of a an episode of “ The Twilight Zone”

The Beatles realise that they have been give the chance to visit the 21st century, in the mirror position, George and Giles realise that they have been give access to all that the Beatles ever recorded , with the ability to utilize 21st century technology!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And we are left staring at the result................a little silver disc which is the child of the two parties involved in the time travel collision..............................Of course....it is called “Love” because it is the love child of two ships that pass in the night..................but what does it contain ?

WE have twenty odd remixed and re-mastered Beatles originals using their creative genius from the sixties and 21st century technology to fulfil their wildest dreams.

The Tracks are:

 1. "Because" – 2:44

 17. "Lady Madonna" – 2:56
 18. "Here Comes the Sun" (with "The Inner Light" transition) (Harrison) – 4:18
 19. "Come Together"/"Dear Prudence" (with "Cry Baby Cry" transition) – 4:45
 20. "Revolution" – 2:14 (CD version) / 3:23 (DVD version)
 21. "Back in the U.S.S.R." – 1:53 (CD version) / 2:34 (DVD version)
 22. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (Harrison) – 3:46
 23. "A Day in the Life" – 5:08
 24. "Hey Jude" – 3:58
 25. "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)" – 1:22
 26. "All You Need Is Love" – 3:39

And what difference did they make? Well to start with everything is in high quality stereo and beyond (DTS 5.1 mixes )……………………..Artistically: they added extra atmosphere and context to the songs that were chosen. Technically they were able to use samples from one track to enhance others which means that they were no longer limited by the technology of the sixties.
There is tremendous fun in trying to locate the samples and work out which track they originally come from and beware they have used all possible recordings …demos …out takes and one new piece of recording
The recording technology has also came of age……………This came out on vinyl…….24 Bit CD and DVD A in which one can really see the scope of the advances we ( might) have made. It is amazing how recordings largely made on valve based equipment stand up so well after some forty years.Cool

What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 18-03-2010

^^ I think Love is a fantastic record, and a sympathetic re-imagination produced as you've outlined.

The remarkable thing - as you say - is that the quality of the original master tapes is outstanding, and some of them are nearer 50 years old than 40 !!

IMHO they were outreaching the capacity of the then-current recording technology toward the end of their run. Some of the late albums are so heavily bounced down and overdubbed that they don't have the quality of, say, Rubber Soul :nerd:

Where it all began. The debut, in the U.K. anyway. Of course here in the states these tracks didn't arrive till much later. Stupid americans. Love these remasters, as we can finally get them in their entirety as they were intended. I do have the complaint once more of the mix being one side vocals and the other music. So once again this will be one of those where I can't listen under the headphones. Hearing defect in my right ear. Oh well, more reason to crank up those regular speakers.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - A Taste Of Honey

Best Track - Do You Want To Know A Secret

You'll never know how much I really love you.
You'll never know how much I really care.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

I've known the secret for a week or two,
Nobody knows, just we two.

Listen,
Do you want to know a secret?,
Do you promise not to tell?, whoa oh, oh.

Closer,
Let me whisper in your ear,
Say the words you long to hear,
I'm in love with you.

Sophomore album from the Illinois boys and one of their best imho. The band, formed in 1975, consisting of Robin Zander (vocals, guitar), Rick Nielsen (guitar), Tom Petersson (bass) and Bun E. Carlos (drums). Produced by Tom Werman, which the band was unhappy with, saying it was over produced. Sounds good to me. They were so unhappy that they went in the studio to re-record the album in 1998 with Steve Albini producing. Now that's a slap in the face. A little extreme I think, to go back 20 years later, but whatever. The project was never completed, although the album was re-released that year. One of those things that make you go hmmmmm. Was it finished or not? From it's kickoff, Hello There, and the call of "would you like to do a number with me?", I was there. The album reached #73 in the U.S. Some excellent live clips here.

Worst Track - Oh Caroline

Best Track - I Want You To Want Me

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I'd love you to love me.
I'm beggin' you to beg me.

I want you to want me.
I need you to need me.
I'd love you to love me.
I'll shine up the old brown shoes, put on a brand-new shirt.
I'll get home early from work if you say that you love me.

Didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?
Feelin' all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin'.
Oh, didn't I, didn't I, didn't I see you cryin'?

Pretty straight forward blues/roots/rock here on this debut album from New York based band founded by Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar), John Ericson (organ) & Terry Wolfers (bass). All were raised in England and made the move to the states although they spend time in both. Some other band members picked up along the way. Looks like a 5 piece in the live clips. Album was released in the U.K. back in September but just now getting to U.S. Not too shabby for a debut, with an outstanding final track. If you like Kings Of Leon, you'll like this.

Now legendary status but yet to strike it big here with this sophomore album from the Irish lads. This only reached #104 in the states. To be honest I have never been on board with the mania. Yes they have had some good songs/albums, and this one is ok, but I just never got it. I think it comes down to Bono and his politics. Really surprised the guy has not run for office, as that seems to be his passion. The band has just been put on that pedestal, undeservingly imo. That being said, this album has a few great tracks and a few duds.

Best Track - I Threw A Brick Through A Window

I was talking
I was talking to myself
Somebody else
Talk talk talking
I couldn't hear a word
A word you said

He was my brother
I said there was no other
Way out of here
Be my brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out

I was walking
I was walking into walls
I'm back again
I just keep walking
I walk into a window
To see myself
And my reflection
When I thought about it
My direction
Going nowhere
Going nowhere

No one...no one is blinder
Than he who will not see
No one...no one is blinder
Than me

I was talking
I was talking in my sleep
I can't stop talking
I'm talking to you
It's up to you

Be my brother
There is another way out of here
In my brother
Gotta get out
Gotta get out
Gotta get out of here

On Spotify. Currently The Same Thing [Live in San Francisco March 18, 1967]

This is a 5-disc mostly live trawl through the Grateful Dead archives. This song is a classy Blues, just the thing for a Friday afternoon chill-out...

The next super group? Or have they already arrived? I think so. Don't think we can call them alternative anymore, as the awards are rolling in. I was sold with Absolution. Yet this is the first I have heard this entire album. Not sure if this tops that for me, but damn close. No I have not heard Resistance, other than what gets played on the air. The group is composed of Matthew Bellamy (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Christopher Wolstenholme (bass, backing vocals), and Dominic Howard (drums and percussion). Of course them studio recordings have to be much more than that. This is the fourth album, and I have not heard the first two either. Someday. This reached #1 in the U.K. and #9 in the states. Singles of Supermassive Black Hole, Starlight and Knights of Cydonia. Only track I couldn't get into was that lead off, which just takes too long for the meat to arrive with the potatoes, and the synth is just annoying. I will end up getting this cd at some point.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Take A Bow

Best Track - Supermassive Black Hole

Oh baby dont you know I suffer?
Oh baby can you hear me moan?
You caught me under false pretenses
How long before you let me go?

You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the 'supermassive'

I thought I was a fool for no-one
Oh baby I'm a fool for you
You're the queen of the superficial
And how long before you tell the truth

You set my soul alight
You set my soul alight

(You set my soul alight)
Glaciers melting in the dead of night
And the superstars sucked into the supermassive
