"Fun" bands--an ongoing series - jazzboCR - 26-02-2014
NOT bands that don't take the music seriously--the just have fun with a genre or mixing music periods. Equal emphasis of music AND fun. Kicking it off:
Here Comes the Mummies funk band supreme but sure up the ante on the costumes and the tunes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yB1z2USriZs << this and the next are from a radio studio gig next http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zrmx8plNCdE // full concert 1:46.00-hang in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7aCNca7GZ5A << they sell-out casino appearances and just kill every time. They are the schiz.
Davina and the Vagabonds want a short course in American popular music and have a rockin' good time doin' it? Invite this Chica and her pals over for a party.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uczSDrX23EY << OK this wasn't so fun but... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55qH2cPoB1g << Bawdy, robust and talented checks a lot of boxes. Next: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1risSGRQmGo << the French love her, and not through any sense of irony either. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXuZAXKnlyw << her best-known song. This'll kick it quick: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V-JYoYZIUjU << take it out like it was brought in, with a slow drag (ha!). The horns, of course, but love that bowed bass.

Here's 2 guys that will rock your sox--intriguing concept, adept execution: 2Cellos. Herewith: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_UA4PqjMXQ << made their name with this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKntoQXt29Y << you don't have to like the song to celebrate what they do with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJPkX6wm0zU << their interplay is so good, it's dern near telepathic. OK, 1 more (but do look them up further): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2SLUxb4i87s << you know the guitarist, even if not in this type of setting: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/steve-hunter-mn0000032823/biography
Yeah they can play it straight: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj4ST5Dsmdc ... but they ain't stiffs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs73gKLoMmM
NOTE: These guys were mentioned and a song quoted by SteveO elsewhere here--this post is follow-on, not my original conception. Thanks, Bro.

Then there's those total mash-up guys, ThePianoGuys. First came to notice with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUvd8oaf9Qk then http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Dakd7EIgBE << hardly a secret band with 10 million views...and their own YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO7ySn-Swwc << not just pianos...but you already figured that out. Lastly: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbJUvVFTAIM OK, I lied: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoS3rD5vKak
incidental intel: That electronic cello is named "Bruce Lee".

Utterly strange--AllMusicGuide purports to be, well, all things music. Yet they totally ignore a top-notch band and it's principals. Formed in '94, they've got 13 discs, 2 collaboration albums (1 with the well-respected Eddy Clearwater), 3 live discs, a perf DVD, they get flown to Spain to do private parties (!) and kill in Germany too. Bizarre. An all-strumental band (think: a fresh-thinking and -playing Ventures) specializing in surf music revived. Ladies and gentlemen, I'm thrilled to present Los Straitjackets. Here's a good wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Los_Straitjackets and here's their music:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qw7sa8tg6Cw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ky1P0zEZIqc << scale up nicely, yes?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4q_ru8__qzs << a complete experience. Thanks to Angie Pontani
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZgcW_9X7vo << another classic
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVWSSS7k5rE << 1+-hour show; with Big Sandy on vocals (of Big Sandy and the Fly-Rite Boys q.v.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2MoyW3o0Mk << it all comes back to the Blues, doesn't it?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTKQ9PdwDyQ << Eddie Angel gets to put his rock-a-billy past to good use
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yc0B5M05yCU << whoever put this project together sure gets my vote...
