Not talking about double entendres but ones that have the whole being misunderstood. My prime candidate is "How Long (Has This Been Going On)" by Ace. It's not a romantic break-up song though it works well as one--it's about a band-member being poached: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How_Long%3F
I like it a lot so I'm posting it twice, one from '77, one more contemporary though both by the author.

SteveO Wrote:^ One would think it is straight forward!...but I can see this may not be true!!!!Isn't most of the best songwriting a bit cryptic, somewhat allegorical? Dylan natch was the past master at it but Paul Simon had his moments. Not for nothing (I just like the pix).: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SExsuRIGAlg << Getting past the dismal part of the past but holding on to the best of it...my take on it anyway.

Maybe not misunderstood but what is the lad on about? My guess: She wants him to speak in tongues, be a cunning linguist or something: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoXxdObGKuI
