PAUL WELLER on record store day' exploitation - CRAZY-HORSE - 09-05-2014

[h=2]i forgot to post this article from paulweller.com the other week
until SteveO gave me a reminder via FB earlier today, so
here is the article in question.

A Message From Paul To His
Fans About Record Store Day[/h]This is a message to all the fans who couldn't get the new vinyl single on Record Store Day and/or paid a lot of money for a copy on eBay.

I agree with all of you who have sent messages expressing your anger and disappointment at the exploitation of these "limited editions" by touts.

Apart from making the record, the rest has very little to do with me but I am disheartened by the whole thing and unfortunately I won't be taking part in Record Store Day again.

It's such a shame because as you know I am a big supporter of independent record stores but the greedy touts making a fast buck off genuine fans is disgusting and goes against the whole philosophy of RSD.

There were copies of my single on eBay the day before Record Store Day and I've heard stories of people queuing outside their local record shop only to be told there were none left at opening time!

It only takes a few to spoil a wonderful concept for everyone else. Shame on those touts.

Don't support their trade and don't let them use Record Store Day to ruin the very thing it's designed to support.

Onwards. PW

PS. I'd like to say thank you for all the positive, supportive comments on our privacy case recently. Bless ya

MY POSITION ON IT....

it is so unfair when any artist releases limited edition vinyl singles or albums to promote anything(in this case RSD) only to have
some record stores exploiting the true diehard fans who line up for, sometimes, hours hoping to secure a copy of a record.
most artists simply re-press old albums for the day or re-release an old single, but in Weller's case he actually releases 7" vinyl
singles of a couple of songs recorded especially for that promotional exercise, and the day, inparticular.

anyway i know it doesnt really make up for owning a limited edition run(in this case 350 copies printed), but in response Paul Weller
has decided to put that limited edition song called "brand new toy" on his soon to be released second solo best of set as a 'f#ck you" response
to the scalpers out there who seek to make money off Record Store Day...
if anyone is interested, i did try to secure one of those 7" Weller singles on the day via family in the UK but alas, i couldnt obtain a copy.
now, the going retail price for the single was approxiamatley 5pounds-sterling. but on ebay these bastards are selling their copies\for anything up to
80pounds-sterling.
i for one will not and have no intention of spending that sort of money to line the pockets of greedy record store staff!

the song itself isnt that great, but if anyone wants to hear it,then i have linked Paul Weller's official video for it below...

Sad state of affairs ! ...I like the song !

As the cynics say--"No good deed goes unpunished."

the problem is that...the diehard fans(like myself) are the ones who are going to get punished in the future with Weller not releasing exclusive material for us vinyl collectors of his material!

the stupid thing is:
i emailed a couple of indipendant record stores in the UK the day prior to RSD and they do do the right thing, they said "it was a first come, first served basis, only one copy of the vinyl per sale and no putting vinyl on hold...they are the agreements they have made with the artists"
so the majority of the stores who are doing the right thing now have to suffer because of unethical minoritys once again.

i have a feeling a lot of other major acts will also pull out of RSD in the future, because Paul Weller is a major player in the UK music industry and his words do hold alot of weight out there...
i mean hey, over the last six years he has been offered OBE's,MBE's and in january was offered a Knighthood from the Queen, but Weller being Weller has declined all of them...still,the offers continue to roll in...youd have thought the Royal family would have got the hint by now!

yeh, theres not much wrong with the track SteveO, its certainly not a Weller "classic" by any means, but for a guy who has released around 90 singles in the UK since 1977, it is acceptable at this stage of his career....so its pretty hard to knock the guy(much like McCartney)!
