JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 30-05-2014 I've dropped hints here and there about stuff I keep coming back to--this formalizes it. No fol-de-rol, no quizzes. Some versions displayed may not be the album example but are on it. John Mayall--The Blues Alone No claim that this is his best, most accomplished disc--too many to choose from and he's gone through stylistic changes not everybody can follow. Here's the Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dusty_in_Memphis BTW, it was she who suggested Atlantic sign Led Zeppelin. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz3znHG70dk&list=PLKJyngu9CVDvBiG4qncGCKM1vA5Wl28DH http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjydOI4MEIw&list=PLKJyngu9CVDvBiG4qncGCKM1vA5Wl28DH&index=3 << most songs can have a gender-change and still work--not possible with this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wl8fKAYQuPk&list=PLKJyngu9CVDvBiG4qncGCKM1vA5Wl28DH&index=8 << soul is as soul does http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11fFE9lR56U&index=6&list=PLKJyngu9CVDvBiG4qncGCKM1vA5Wl28DH BTW here's another nifty site about music: http://coolalbumreview.com/ I've bookmarked it. JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 31-05-2014 Aaron Neville Orchids in the Storm A 5-song EP done in '83 and released in '86, it's Mr. Neville doing "50's songs--a match made in Heaven. Top-notch arrangements, playing, B/U singers--a labor of love for all involved. Being as it's so short, I'll link all--tell everybody you know who likes doo-wop about this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvQePUBmd9w << the Johnny Ace classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqzS-W06SJI << gone; here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1X1z4NuMys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vobnMrhSIRE <<This version was taken down; see this instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDnjbXExuc4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpqTm8We-uE <<This also removed; try this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zpuicgIQV2Y http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNVm4dBfzQY Gorgeous. Lush and lovely. One of those "Got emotional junk you need to get out? Here's the purgative." discs. Arturo Sandoval Swingin' As accomplished a Latin music maven as he is, this has no Latin rhythms at all--this '96 emission is hard bop all the way. Terrific players and arrangements, and, natch, masterful trumpet (he plays piano on "Streets of Desire"). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyBkkoaxv_Q I couldn't find much posted from this album so I've gone to other perfs by him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9PcZ4Tx1HA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdBCBlOqfRE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ErUBGmwGCI Due to the lack, here's AMG on the album--do seek it out--bounteous rewards: http://www.allmusic.com/album/swingin-mw0000187945 BONUS: I just had to include 1 Latin piece (not on the album).: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NWm4dv83k4 << big band Afro-Cuban at it's absolute best JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 07-06-2014 Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd Jazz Samba One of the best-selling jazz records and for good reason--"jazz" enough for aficionados; melodic and soft enough to lure all others in. 4 different rhythm players including Charlie's brother. Latin rhythms have had a place in mainstream jazz since at least the late '40's with Dizzy Gillespie but they were usually harder-edged--"Manteca" e.g.; this disc greatly broadened the appeal. A minor downside: a lot of players thought they had to do Bossa Nova albums or at least a tune or two, and were ill-equipped to do so effectively. Couldn't find the whole album; here's some cuts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-vlX8uRLMQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rMOML8eIIA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdMfRwmDUmU << always liked "The Duck"; the Charmin bears, not so much http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F14SrP3_Es << the most-remembered tune JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - SteveO - 07-06-2014 Sorry Jazz man to interrupt your interesting thread as usual, but I have to ask you your opinion of this album! The reception to The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady has been generally positive. Richard Cook and Brian Morton, writers of The Penguin Guide to Jazz, award the album a "Crown" token, the publication's highest accolade, in addition to the highest four-star rating.[SUP][2][/SUP] Steve Huey of Allmusic awards The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady five stars out of five and describes the album as "one of the greatest achievements in orchestration by any composer in jazz history."[SUP][3][/SUP] Q magazine describes the album as "a mixture of haunting bluesiness, dancing vivacity, and moments of Andalusian heat..." and awards it four of five stars.[SUP][5] Quote from Wikipedia It's a great jazz composition but I enjoy many others besides this one.[/SUP] JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 20-06-2014 Feeling semi-bluesy and need something to provoke those tears, so you can get it all out? Then you want Rebecca Parris My Foolish Heart. It was her 7th disc and the first all-ballad (though do look at '07's You Don't Know Me). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlVLSpKTmMU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUqAuqCN-jU Wasn't much I could find from this one--how about a couple with that most empathic jazzman, Gary Burton? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5QDP2gxyoo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhIgCoEfPhY Here's a live perf at the Apollo Theater (NYC): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ST0Fio88nKg JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 22-06-2014 Herb Alpert My Abstract Heart "Too carefully crafted" and "soulless--programmatic to an extreme" or "a Big Dog's artistic indulgence"--I've heard them all...and say "So what? It works." Bottom line: I like'm. Mr. Alpert got his start pandering cynically to the masses--those watered-down quasi-Mexican pieces. Took that money and clout, got together with a very sharp cookie (in only the positive sense), Jerry Moss, and started A&M Records. No schlock-meisters they, they gave a start to or a leg up to some serious artists: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%26M_Records His late-90's-to-date work has been stunning (dip your cup in the well anywhere--you'll be pleased); he always issued discs sporadically (keeping his hand in the game and his chops fresh) but he caught some late fire, late--sold the company and shed executive responsibilities. This is the least of his modern output...and it's still fun.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAlZ-cerL4s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKHnyBkh91U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h_wPxJMKz6E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XNLAtaFLng http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFBpCklWuTI From this era, you should probably choose '87's Keep Your Eye on Me: http://www.allmusic.com/album/keep-your-eye-on-me-mw0000188950 << sure could do without his singing--put that breath through your trumpet, Bro. JazzboCR' s fave discs--an ongoing compendium - jazzboCR - 16-10-2014 Here's a terrif short-snorter (an EP that was never issued independently--only as a part of a package): Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe covering the Everly Brothers...feel the love from these 2 masters. Stay with it--a 10-minute segment rolls into an 11-minute segment. In all sincerity--it's not all Everlys but it is all good. Cogent suggestions at the bottom of other early R&Rs including cover/tribute albums. I've linked this from a Site that continues to impress: http://coolalbumreview.com/?p=12823 |
