How to transcribe chord voicings for piano and guitar? - Blanche_Minim - 10-10-2014 I am taking Jazz Piano lessons at York University and my teacher and I are also doing ear training in my music lesson. My assignment is to transcribe "My Romance" by Ella Fitzgerald and "Barbados" by Charlie Parker. He expects me not to just transcribe the melody, but to know the chord voicings by ear. I am not getting marked on it, but it's something I would love to do for the rest of my life. I have no experience transcribing chord voicings. It's something I have never done before. Is there a step-by-step procedure to transcribe it systematically? RE: How to transcribe chord voicings for piano and guitar? - JeromeD - 27-09-2021 I know very little about jazz but are you expected to do this by ear alone without sitting down at the piano? Your teacher is busy teaching you the structure of harmony. In jazz this can be complex. In fact it is one of it's strengths. As for a system I don't know of any as such but I am guessing that your teacher wants to train your ear to recognize the chord underpinning the melodic note at any given time. A very good way to teach the student to appreciate and recognize harmonic structure which is very different to popular/rock music or even classical at times. |
