Rap is not in my Ipod. When I was in elementary school and high school, rap was popular. Back when I was a teenager, I listened to rap out of peer pressure, my observation is that it is just a person yapping, with a lousy voice projection, on a background track. The background track is considered music, but the person yapping is not. I don't know how Eminem became so popular, he is just yapping about his mom, trapped in a closet or something, with swear words added. I remember in high school, I would be listening to my favourite rock bands ex. Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck in secret, as long as I don't get busted with the cool kids, because they are considered old fashioned, but those were the days.
Now in University I am listening to more fruitful music: Death Metal, Progressive Rock, Nu-Metal, Classic Rock, Jazz, Classical, Blues, 60's 70's 80's Pop, Film Music.
He he I am enjoying my Chrismas Break. It's snowy in Toronto right now.

i agree for the most part but....
i love Eminem...
his albums are a soundtrack to his life for the most part,
sure theres the typical cliched rap crap at times, but the albums are a timeline of his life from childhood to whatever current events affect him at that time...
he actually had a real bad upbringing and he uses his words as therapy to move foreward, and his mum played a huge part in that part of his life!

Both Bob Dylan and Eminem will never make it on the first round of American Idol. There are some tracks where Eminem sings in the chorus, but he is no Josh Groban. By the way, everyone in American Idol sounds the same. Bob Dylan has a unique voice, so he will not win American Idol.

I understand he had a bad upbringing. I lived a good childhood, but a terrible teenagehood. If I am a music artist (which I want to be), I will make dozens of Death Metal and Rock and Pop songs talking about universal grief and sounding more poetic justice than whining about what didn't work out 10 years ago.
Now the Pop songs, most of them are love songs and about loving one another (which shows my happy side), for example, the Carpenters (I need a female partner who can sing), but once in a while I will be in Elton John or John Lennon mode talking about miserable life.
My plan has not materialized yet, but I guarantee you it's good stuff.

theres plenty of successful singers,who, if they listened to the experts would have given up before they began...
Elvis Presley...couldnt even win 'county fair' competitions back in the day.
Neil Young.....rejected by Warner when Buffalo Springfield split,Warner preferred to keep Stephen Stills signed to the label, and begrudgingly signed NY to their offshoot label Reprise Records,stating "his whiney voice is grating and irritating,he'll never make it,but we'll give him a go becuase of Stills insistance"
Beatles.........rejected by every major label in the UK, eventually taken onboard by Parlaphone Records as a last resort.
Mamas and The Papas....rejected by every label in NY, had to go to California to make a start
Glen Frey......rejected by Geffen Records until he could come back with a band,because they said "he'll never cut it as a singer on his own", a week later he came back with what became Eagles and the rest is history there.
i have no time for those Idol type shows, as half those old singers would not get past the first round if they entered.
the problem with those shows,as far as i see it, is that the producers want "instant success" not growth in an artist, thats probably why a lot of singers nowadays probably wont be around in ten,twenty,thirty,forty,fifty years time like your McCartney's,Jagger's,Elton's,Daltry's etc.
and another thing...
you read bio's of people like Beatles etc...they have interesting stories of their formative years in Cavern,Hamburg etc right?!
what are these young Idol/X-Factor singers going to write in their autobio's in twenty years time..."oh yeh, i started off with an audition on tv"...no history there, no 'paying dues' etc...
instant success is superficial and short lived which is a shame for the artists in question because the rubbish pile is the only place they'll end up, the only ones who win in the end are the TV networks, and people like Simon Cowell.
thats my rant for the day, now, back to the music...LOL

NO. Because the words are way more important than the music. Call it "spoken word with musical accompaniment", similar to what the Beat poets of the '40's-'50's did. Hip-hop OTOH is music.

You posted this on MB as well, and as everyone said, yes, rap is music. I find it strange how you ask such a question. There is a rhythm and beat isn't there? And as for the "yapping", its called rapping. And clearly you haven't listened to much of it. You also consider death metal more fruitful. Each to their own, but I find it really strange how you think rap isn't music, but consider death metal as music, and more fruitful at that. Death Metal has screaming and deep growling vocals. You care to explain the difference between rap and death metal, in terms of what you consider music?

When I was listening to Death Metal, when I was a teenager, the first thing I noticed was the death growls and I didn't like it at first. I consider it chaotic. I was about to throw the CD in the garbage until I listened to a guitar solo that changed my life. I never heard a guitar solo played like that before. I looped it many times and I got into death metal. I eventually got used to the chaos, and I noticed that the guitars, bass, drums, and sometimes the synths and piano are very busy. Which leads to my conclusion that death metal is music. In a sense, it's like listening to jazz and blues.
When it comes to rap, I have the same problem with electronica music, dance music, or I don't what it's called trance music or something (I don't know what it's called). I consider Eurobeats music, but the music that is coming out (music that I hear in the shopping malls), anything that is based on midi, there is a conflict on me, because personally I don't like it. It has a tone, but for some reason, it has no impact on me.

The background can be considered music, but rap has no melody, it is just a person talking. When people are conversing, their is a sound, but I don't want to have the final say that there is a pitch when people are conversing. Even if there is, they would be singing off-key.
