Remixers that do it right - jazzboCR - 25-02-2015

Mostly, I dislike++ remixers--a bunch of half-witted hacks, mostly. These folks are w-a-a-a-y different. They take an original track, strip out all the instrumentals (leaving the vocals virgo intacta) and replace them with excellent Brazillian orchestration. Some easy choices, some surprising choices. Skin in the game disclosure: I just ordered both the above discs.

They also did as a fund-raising projects, these: http://www.rhythmsdelmundo.org/ << Africa and Revival << I like this from that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyDUhFt0h-U and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPAttqn-QYE << don't just dab on the eye-shadow, me Buckos--slather it on....good rendition though.

Remixers that do it right - CRAZY-HORSE - 25-02-2015

i generally dislike remixes, but sometimes, and i mean only sometimes i prefer them to the original tracks...
and they only work when the guys remixing them actually know and appreciate the artist who's music they are remixing....
or when they keep the original track as is and add to it, or alternatively, just change them slightly...
some tracks sound cluttered to me(and one springs to mind immediately, yet the remix of it is clean, crisp and well done)...

i'll have a think about a few overnight and post the original versions of songs and the remixes i like over the next couple of days and you can decide....

as a footnote, remixes were invented,or developed, to lengthen three minute pop songs in the early 1980s so that nightclub dj's didnt have to change the vinyl records so often,
now though,
it seems a pre-requisite to release them for more sales...

in 1982...
UK band The Jam released a 'double 'a' side single..."town called malice" b/w "precious"...
"precious" was a funk based tune and on the 12" version of the vinyl single they remixed the track to over double its length...
anyway,
to cut a long story short fans bought both the 7" and 12" versions which catapulted the single straight to #1 in the UK...
the same week The Stranglers released "golden brown" which debuted at #2....
The Stranglers lodged a complaint with the BPI(british phonogaphic industry) stating that if there werent two different versions of that single, that they would have
gone straight to #1 and not The Jam...
the complaint was rejected by the BPI and their reasoning was...."you can release what you want as a single,no problem"

the following year....
Frankie Goes To Hollywood went to #1 with "relax" and the follow up single "two tribes"...
they were releasing a different remix each week on 12" vinyl and fans were snapping up each and every version, which helped those singles each sell 2million copies in the UK alone and remaining in the charts for around a year each....
to sell 2million copies of a single in the UK was a rarity back then and so was remaining in the charts for a year....
so i guess they really started the total influx of remixed singles to attain sales....

enough of my ramblings about remixes and the overview of them in the UK charts dating back over 30years...but hey, you want reply posts with answers...you got it!
i hope that helps with any info you may like.

and i will get back to my posting original versions and remixes soon.

I prefer to call them ripoffs

C-H--Very interesting, on-point post and just what I was looking to provoke (in a good way). As far as being rip-offs: I tried to make the point that the majority of remixes are just that...but sometimes it is done well enough with enough intelligence and taste to merit being considered "new" or at least an extension. Also those 4 Berman Brothers projects were in aid of charities or "good works" projects so a little slack is due them; they made their money doing high-level but crassly commercial stuff--I view this as a bit of give-back even though they were paid for it.
Another point: Isn't much of modern pop disguised remixes in that "artists" and their producers take a chunk from here, a shard from there and put'm in the stewpot? We emphasize originality here but so little actually is. End of rant.
