One is newer but his 2 CDs are great individually and show great growth; the other has a 50-year history of excellence.
JD McPherson has a new CD that shows how he's re-defining roots/Americana/early rock music (rockabilly with a B-3, e.g.? Yes and it works so well). http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jd-mcpherson-mn0002597633/discography << Unusual for AMG to have comments on anyone's first 2 albums but it's equally unusual for said artist to come storming out with 2 4-star albums. Celebrating 50 years of musical excellence * comes this stunner of a 2-CD set featuring re-thinks/re-cuts of his best stuff with very special guests: Chris Smither Still on the Levee
As he grows deeper into sobriety, he matures like English oak--he's 70 and, Lordy, ain't he saving his best for last! A Wiki (and what a life he's led): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Smither One thing about him shines through clearly--once he signs onto a project, as leader or sideman, it will be a success musically. He's quite an accomplished writer too--short stories and bits like this: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/08/business/08flier.html His Site: http://smither.com/ His work, not my blather, convinces.
Some tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQejZmaMMIU << Whether impromptu as here or structured, Mr. Smither always shines...and brings the truth.

BONUS: Mr. Smither talking about that marvy melding of folk and the Blues he does (plays a bit too,of course): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XIG-aAuZLs
