Why music needs to be paid for! - Vickiixm - 31-03-2015
Living in the digital age, it's taken for granted that most people download their music. However, how many people actually pay for the tracks they download? Piracy has been a major issue for the music industry since the internet was invented,and is something still very much at large today. With companies like Last.FM, Soundcloud and Kickstarter trying to tackle the issue, I wanted to find out why you should be paying for your music.

I don't do digital downloads at all, never,never will....
I paid for ALL my vinyl and pay for ALL my cds,
I've never got a digital copy of any song EVER.

I'm solidly with CH on this. 2 words and a phrase come to mind when speaking on digital downloads--"transitory", "ephemeral" and "poor quality". End of story, Morning Glory.

The basic bottom line is that people do not want to pay for music anymore - the mindset amongst the digital generation is that music should be free. I cannot see it changing in the near future. The major record labels don't have a clue how to deal with this - in fact as long as music exists in digital form they are not going to be able to stop it anyway. No security system will ever work - there's always a way around it. As soon as an album/single is able to be heard it can be recorded to a different medium (CD etc.). The actual audio does not have to be digital either. Take vinyl - you play it on an analogue turntable, route the headphone output to a PC and you can create a digital copy in the time it takes to play the album. Game over. It's really sad because it means that those who are really serious about music are now becoming reluctant to spend the large sums of money required to produce high quality work because they cannot recoup that money. For myself personally, I think it's going to result in the market becoming flooded with inferior crap made by 'producers' masquerading as musicians when they do not even understand the basics of what the different effects are about, let alone the instruments they are 'playing'. There will always be those who create original inspiring music but they are increasingly relying on benefactors to fund the project - the increasing amount of crowdfunding sites is testimony to this trend. Even established names, like Toni Childs for example, are heading down this road. Spotify and all the other vulture companies are exploiting this whole issue by paying musicians a diabolically small amount for streaming their music. They of course get to keep the lion's share. It's a dying industry but will never be a dying art. In order to recoup what I have spent on my own project I would have to sell 10000 copies via normal CD distribution. If I had to rely solely on Spotify I would have to sell 400 000 000 copies. (0.0002 cents per stream.) And that is without making any profit at all. That's just breaking even. Still, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I will continue to create music regardless of the money. You either want to do it or you don't. The motivation should be a desire to be creative not the bottom line in a bank account.

Smart modern pop musicians know all this and count on concert appearances and merchandise sales--anything else is incidental income.
