THE DEATH OF TWO SINGER-QUASARS
Part 1:

When aperson gets into their 70s, as I did in 2014, celebrities from the worlds ofthe movies and television, from the music world, indeed, from many worlds ofpopular culture, begin to die like flies. That metaphor may be a bit toostrong, but their deaths are periodic occurrences which begin to dot thelandscape of one’s life-narrative. I write below about the lives and deaths oftwo famous people in the last four months, people from popular culture, peoplewho were out on the distant periphery of my life experience, my life-narrative.

Part 1.1:

PercySledge, who recorded the classic 1966 soul ballad When a Man Loves a Woman, died aged 73, at his home in Baton Rouge Louisiana. I remember that song which was releasedin April 1966. That was the last month of my three year B.A. degree insociology. I was 21, a member of the Baha’i community of Dundas Ontario, andabout to get married and pioneer to the Canadian Arctic for the Baha’icommunity of Canada.

Sledgedied early on 14/4/’15. He had been diagnosed with liver cancer in early 2014. Sledge’sfirst recording took him from being a hospital orderly to a long touring careeraveraging 100 performances a year. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hallof Fame in 2005. Between 1966 and 1968, Sledge used his forlorn, crying vocalstyle to record a series of southern soul standards. While his first hit When a Man Loves a Woman was by far hismost famous song, other popular singles included Take Time to Know Her and ItTears Me Up.

By 1968 hehad largely fallen from commercial favour, though songs like Take Time to Know Her continued to berevered by soul fans. By 1968, I was living on the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] biggestisland in the world, Baffin Island, and teaching Inuit children. Sledge, whohad been only a faint light on my event horizon, had completely disappearedinto one of the many black holes into which so much of popular culturedisappeared during my lifespan. In later years, Sledge continued to be indemand as a performer in the US and Europe. Whena Man Loves a Woman has continued topop up in movies, including The Big Chilland The Crying Game. But Sledgehad gone, until a news-event in April 2015 brought him back onto my eventhorizon.

Cilla Black, a 1960spop star championed by The Beatles, became one of Britain's best-lovedtelevision presenters. She died yesterday, as I write these words, on Sunday 2August 2015, in Spain. The 72-year-old was found at her home near MarbellaSpain. The Daily Telegraph and Daily Mirror newspapers reportedthe event quoting Spanish police.

Big hearted and full oflaughs, this working-class redhead from Liverpool was a fixture on Britishtelevision screens for more than 50 years, known just by her first name. She started out working in thecloakroom at the Cavern club, where fellow Liverpudlians The Beatles were firstspotted, before taking to the stage as a singer herself. The band championed Blackand introduced her to their manager Brian Epstein, who signed her.

Black released herfirst single in 1963 and the following year had two Number One hits,"You're My World" and "Anyone Who Had a Heart". The formerSong was number 1 in the UK at the end of May 1964. I was just completing thefirst year of my B.A. degree at McMaster university in the lunch-pail city ofHamilton Ontario.

She went on to release14 albums. In 1968 she began hosting her own television talk show, beginning abroadcasting career that saw her present some of Britain's most popularprogrammes over half a century. I knewlittle to nothing about TV in the U.K. and little about TV in Canada sincethese were the years in which I had no TV.

Part 2.1:

Actress Joan Collinswas one of the first to pay tribute, saying on Twitter that she was "sadand shocked" and adding: "She was a resplendent and raretalent." Scotland'sFirst Minister Nicola Sturgeon described her as "one of my childhoodidols". "My earliest memory of having a tantrum was overCilla. I wanted her album. My mum and dad said no — my grandad said yes. I was 4," the Scottish nationalist leadersaid.

Black was made an OBEin 1997 and last year was given a special award from the British Academy ofFilm and Television Arts (BAFTA), which called her an "icon". In itscitation, BAFTA said she had hosted more than 500 television shows and madearound 400 guest appearances on others, regularly drawing audiences of 18million people. Black was married to Bobby Willis, who became her manager andwho died in 1999. They had three sons as well as a daughter who died ininfancy.

These two names were completelyunknown to me until their deaths were announced in the print and electronic media: 4/’15 to 8/’15. There are so many names now frompopular culture & academic culture, people who have come into my lifelike distant stars in a far-off galaxy,or exploding quasars[SUP]1[/SUP] of immenseluminosity, but here today & gonetomorrow into a hole for those whospeak no more or even sing no more. Perhaps, though, like quasars, theywill go on emitting light for billionsof years in a world beyond this worldonly to merge over time into one of theblack holes in, say, 3 to 5 billion years.

Ron Price3/8/’15.

[SUP]1 [/SUP]Quasars, orquasi-stellar radio sources, are the most energeticand distant members of a class of objects called active galactic nuclei (AGN). Quasars are extremely luminous and were firstidentified as being high redshift sources of electromagnetic energy, including radio waves and visible light, that appeared to besimilar to stars, rather than extended sources similar to galaxies. Their spectra containvery broad emission lines, unlike any known fromstars, hence the name "quasi-stellar." Their luminosity can be 100times greater than that of the Milky Way. Most quasars were formed approximately12 billion years ago caused by collisions of galaxies and their central blackholes merging to form a supermassive black hole. Ron Price3/8/’15 to 5/8/'15.

It has now been a week since Black's passing. As many of her fans know, Black had previously said that she wanted to die when she reached 75.[SUP][ [/SUP]According to a friend, she had recently said that she was approaching death, complaining of failing eyesight and hearing, & arthritis. On 3 August a spokesperson for the High Court of Justice in Andalusía, suggested that an accident may have been a contributing factor in Black's death. At Liverpool Town Hall a book of condolence was opened.

Following the results of a post-mortem examination, on 4 August two of her sons confirmed that Black died from a stroke following a fall in her Spanish villa. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Sheridan Smith, were among friends, colleagues in the entertainment industry and politicians who expressed their sorrow at Black's death. Comedian and friend Paul O'Grady told the Liverpool Echo: "Please tell me this isn’t true? We’ve been friends for nearly 20 years. She’s like my sister. Apart from her hearing she was all right. We had a week together in Barbados at the beginning of the year and I saw her on my birthday. I thought she was well. I can’t believe it, to tell you the truth." Comedian Jimmy Tarbuck, who had been a friend for decades, said: "She was the girl next door that everybody loved and would have loved as a daughter, a daughter-in-law."

This brings that over-all--unanswerable question: Do you want to fade slowly, month by month, or get taken quickly? The answer to a proper religionist of whatever sect should be easy. For us atheists and non-believers, it's a little bit messier. RIP, Sister Black.

This is one of my favorite quotes: A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson
