I read a similar conversation on another site and thought I would post it here.
Have you ever listened to an album and thought it was just too long, making it boring?

Not yet...

Except those albums by those pop punk bands. Every second is one second too long.

Word.

Aside from that, I do think length can negatively affect an album.
I hate songs with a minute or more of nonsense at the end... just silence, or one continued drum beat, etc. Dream Theater comes to mind...

I also hate songs that repeat themselves too much.

I love playing Guitar Hero. "Scream, Aim, Fire", by Bullet For My Valentine, is very fun, but terribly repetitive. Maybe 2 minutes of good song in there, then 3 more of the same stuff.

Well in my opinion it depends on the artist, the song and your preferences.

Music can in a sense be too long. Simply put that over extending a repeated introduction melody or an extravagant guitar solo may make the song longer than it really it. But this is a rare occasion for songs and it is hardly found on the greatest albums of all time. People say that jazz albums have overextended tracks; a true misconception as jazz incorporates the art of improvisation and most jazz bands had at least 5 members to a band if not more; ie Bitches Brew.

Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle is quite long...

I haven't run into that much. Sometimes I wish albums were longer, actually.

yeah, albums can be too short. It really depends on the type of music we are listening to. like if were have a copy of a record by an emotional goth band we assume that it's gonna be a long album, as opposed to punk rock which has edgy, fast-paced riffs and lyrics to get their point across. It's all relative.
