Interesting thread ! ..one that comes to mind is Canadian singer Mary Margaret O'Hara who released the seminal album Miss America in 1988 and never performed live due to stagefright ! She's the sister of actor Catherine O'Hara.
Most artists would want the extra cash ! In some ways the studio album is superficial versus the live concert...the ultimate fusion between artist and audience..the ones who buy their music !

Seems impossible in this day to make the money other artists can without performing live since there is so much money in that. But with internet and all I guess it's possible to get popular without it.
