Hello
We are a band of 3 brothers hailing from Ontario Canada and have been playing music for a good 16 years now. The links are to two original songs from our soon to be released album that we have self recorded called What Is Love!! We have many, many influences and styles through out our music including bands like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Dire Staits, Paul Simon, Talking Heads and on and on haha. I quite like some of this but there are a number of things that bug me as well. Going to have another listen and then give some advice on the recording which I think needs a lot of work.
First of all I think you have the ability to come up with good ideas but the execution of those ideas needs attention.
Some tips;
The drums are recorded very badly - in your second sample the whole kit is stuck in the centre of the stereo spectrum. High toms to floor toms should be panned across the stereo spectrum more. If you have two top toms and two floor toms I would pan them from 10 o'clock to 3 o'clock (from the drummers's point of view). That will open up the sound of the kit and allow people to hear what the drummer is doing a lot better. Also the reverb setting or the space that the kit is recorded in does not match the rest of the instrumentation. Sounds like the kit was recorded live in a room while the rest of the instruments were direct-injected. There needs to be a 'common' reverb setting across the whole group.
BTW - at times the vocalist sounds a lot like David Bowie.
On the first track there is too much reverb on the vocal. It makes the words indistinct. Try more chorus and less reverb. Also the bass needs to be more prominent in the mix - not a whole lot - just a touch up on the lower frequencies on the EQ.
I really like the opening riff on the second track - you could have just kept to that and turned out a whole track just based on that. Again too much reverb on the vocal. The second part of the track does not really match the first part. Or the title.
There are a lot of small effects - maybe too many - happening in the background and the combined reverb from all these effects is masking the more prominent instruments. Keep them panned away from the centre of the mix or you are going to end up with aural soup.

And BTW - these are just my own observations. Other members will see it differently. I do most of my listening on headphones so I tend to hear more detail. Or maybe my ears are shot from listening to too many albums at volume 11! You have some good ideas and as a band you gel together but I think you could improve on the recording process. My advice - get a second opinion.

OK, I am going to stick my neck out here. I am not a professional musician or audio engineer - in fact never been inside a studio in my life. But I would like to have a stab a mixing this track of yours - your second track - People of the Night - intrigues me more. Anyway, if you can provide the stems/tracks without any processing on them I am willing to have a stab at trying to improve the mix. Absolutely no charge and no credits required. Just an exercise for me to improve my skills and I might not even be able to do a better job anyway. BTW I have never done any mixing for anyone else before so I am a complete novice at this but I think if you can provide UNprocessed tracks and a breakdown of the drumkit (depends how many mikes you used on the kit) I can improve on your current mix. I think you have something going on but I still feel it's not 'finished'. This is probably not what you want to hear, but it's what I think should happen. There is something called the Haas Effect - which I know little about and this is clouding up the waters on your track. I am a normal working stiff, so I don't have a lot of time availabe but if you like I will have a stab at this. My own stuff - just as a mix reference, can be found at http://www.auralscapes.com

And I think the riff of 'People of the Night' should be pursued - it's good.
