The end of "good" music - The Anonymous Groupie - 28-02-2016
what happened to the days of great music. Iâm not talking about well produced, full sounding pieces of EDM shit. Iâm talking about the real stuff. Iâm a 94 kid, lucky to be born passed the times when the world was facing itâs real problems but unlucky to be born after the time when music was a great guitar solo, a singerâs crackling howl or the Smashing Pumpkins 1979.
Apparently people are saying that Tame Impala is the worldâs last mega rock band, but to me that is the twist of the knife to my heat. No more originals by Bill Corgan, no more Anthony Kiedis losing his shit on stage, and perhaps the last greatest artist, Amy Winehouse. No more jazz, instead more âtechnoâ, more of that âdoof doorâ shit and more of that music that no one could ever really appreciate because it was never really great⦠unless played in a club with a bunch of kids either high, drunk or tripping of too many "MDâs" / "mollys" / "ecstactcy" / whatever it's called these days.
Itâs sad to say, but itâs true. I wish I was born a generation earlier, perhaps even three or four so that I could have been born in time to see Jimmy Hendrix and the Gypsies let lose. A time when I may have had to face the real problems of the world but could have at least got lost in the real music of the world. Today my only connection to that world of music and time of life is martin scorsesesâ Vinyl. Even the foo fighters have thrown in the towel, but we wonât go there, considering that they still may be one of my favourite bands. The fact that they came to SA and played with a random motor cyclist that they met is enough to have me sold.
Gone are the days of Kurt Cobain saying âIâm not gay, but I wish I were to piss off homophobes.â Now are the days of kids like Justin Bieber making headlines, Kanye & Kimâs wedding breaking the news & worst of all, Justin Bieberâs sorry topping Adele (right now on the billboard 100).
If I had a final wish it would be to see Oasis back in action, beating out Cigarettes & Alcohol & not giving a shit about the media or what anyone else said. Gone are the days of people like Amy Winehouse being quoted to say âall the instrumentation is completely live. I wouldnât have any fake horns on my record. I think they put fake strings on Take The Box, but I wasnât part of that.â
Maybe Iâm nostalgic, maybe Iâm snobbish, maybe I could be categorised as an "audiophile" but in all honestly, the best musicians seem to be the most troubled musicians (barring Dave Groll). But if I had one final wish, it would be to see these artists live, in all their glory.
Please, anyone out there who is half good at guitar, vocals and can strum a chorus, put your music out there, show me the light and for **** sakes, letâs pray that music isnât dead.

Can't say I agree with everything you say, but yes, I long for the days of real bands - Led Zep, Floyd, Kansas etc. Today all we have is plastic pop and although I like electronic music as well, EDM is the worst thing that has happened to music. There is NO thought behind it at all. Same goes for rap and all the other spinoffs from that stupid genre.

theres plenty of 'real' bands out there but you have to spend a lot of time sifting through the crap in the sewer to find the gold.

and that is the reason why aging rockers like McCartney, Stones, Elton, Rod Stewart etc can still sell out stadiums, because no one is replacing them,
and why other old stars like Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee, Hollies, Manfred Mann and the old blues guys still tour also....there is a market for them, and as average as they may
be live by their early standards, people feel good paying good money to see real musicians and know they are singing live without lip syncing and auto tune.

Consciously or not, people want music to be the way it was because the music was 'better' back then because their lives were better, or simpler, or whatever.
That's not to say everyone's life gets worse when they get older. We evolve as we get older. We change.
Surprise surprise...so does music.
Everyone here in this forum is a more-than-passive music fan, so I know everyone here remembers when they discovered music.
Everyone here remembers the bands and songs they cut their musical teeth on.
They also remember their lives during those years...
Summer of 81. Seventeen years old, Journey's Escape, REO Speedwagon's Hi Fidelity, my 76 Chevy Nova and Donna. Probably the best summer of my life.
I'm not unique at all. Everyone reading this could write a sentence like that, that captures a moment in their lives.
That's why 'our' music is best. Not because of the production, the tonalities, the style, the lyrics, etc.
It's the best because it defines us personally.
Look, the music industry is lazy now. The don't scout talent. They televise cattle call talent shows.
The winners are chosen by the general public, so the record companies sign these people, knowing they're a lock to make money.
It's smart business, even if the acts are bland and vanilla.
But you know what? Mainstream is not the only place to find music.
Like CRAZY HORSE said, there's plenty of good music out there. You just have to make an effort to look for it.
And you have to give it an honest listen. You can't listen to 30 seconds and say, 'Nope, it's crap" just because it doesn't sound like what you're used to.
Here's a challenge...
Create a playlist of a dozen songs or so, songs by groups you're unfamiliar with. Listen to it for a couple days and see if you absorb anything.

Actually, probably like a lot of people here (if not every person here), no matter where I was, how I felt of how up or down my life happened to be at that time, music has been a constant presence.
Whatever you feel at any time, music's always got your back.
The difference between people like us, and the passive music fan, is we'll sit in the driveway until a song is over before going inside.
(in my case, my wife knows what I was listening to because I listen at a ridiculously loud volume. Drowns out my singing.:laugh

Great music is still out there. You just have to really look for it these days. Sadly I didn't find what I think is flawless until the singer himself went forward last fall and I couldn't be anymore ashamed of myself, I love the late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal so much!

what's "popular" today is pretty lame to me as well. I think the quality in mainstream music started to die around the mid to late 90s, during the boy band era, and then internet pirating didn't help either. I too wonder when will this change, it's like we've been on this same train for at least 15 years. Right now, it's mostly trap music and edm. I also hate how R&B and Hiphop got fused together. I cannot wait for this trap music era to end, all those damn hi hats and bass is just too much. With this being said, there are and have been some good mature artists to make noise since the 90s. But yeah it's nothing like the old days.
I was just listening to the Casey Kasem's Top 40 archives on youtube, it's really refreshing to hear how radio use to sound. It used to make us feel some type of way. I feel like I was privileged to be born in '81, because the 80s and some of the 90's was full of good music from all genres.
