Johnny Cash's "hurt"...a cover of a NiN(nine inch nails) song...
the original has no feel or soul to it...
John makes it his own, in fact its as though the song was written either by him or with him in mind!
not your usual JC track, but a haunting ballad that sums up his whole life, well worth a listen if you dont know it(and that includes you Jerome!)

Not to go too deep but...considering the great masses of folks who abandoned him and the one who was always steadfast...that lends poignancy and That Edge to his version.

May have said this before but there are covers and then there are total re-imaginings using the bare bones of the song. Bettye LaVette has had a career resurgence with that philosophy; Conrad Herwig has built a career-within-a-career with his Latin reworkings of bop/hard bop composer/players. Here's 4 such:

Absolutely Brilliant! Thanks Jazzy! I love this stuff...can't go wrong with Joe Lovano,,such a red hot sax player and a great composer! Loved the So What version,,,at the 2:25 mark, the loud cymbal crash is retained like the original by Jimmy Cobb!
