Are you kidding? This is probably one of Beyonce's best singles so far this year. There is so much behind this song & the video that i bet you completely missed out on.
No offense grumpy old man, but I've seen a lot of your posts & you are extremely negative towards the music out there. Actually post something you enjoy instead of trying to keep up with the latest trend & then try to bash it with your "I hate it." attitude. Why do you hate it? Elaborate so we can have a DISCUSSION. Yes youre entitled to your opinion, but If you're not supporting anything then there's really no point. Be open minded instead of secluding yourself to the new artists.

I took the trouble to listen to that, but I'm afraid I could find nothing to like. There may a lot "behind" the song and the video, but it sholdn't be necessary for the listener to know all that.

My problems with that single (I am reluctant to call it a song) are twofold. Firstly, I generally don't enjoy rap in any form. Trying to get beyond that, though, most rap I hear seems to be accompanied by at least some sort of catchy rhythm, occasionally an interesting melody line in the backing. This appears to have nothing at all except shouting, and a few chords that appear at certain isolated points, so I cannot even understand the appeal to someone who likes rap.

Another grumpy old man here - this 'music' is complete crap. Lyrics display the intelligence of a twelve year-old. Music is irritating - just the same old 'beat' with some incidental noises. Video is hysterically stupid. The normal 'let's show as much skin as possible because we need to coat everything in sex' attitude. They just can't seem to think of anything else these days. Music for the mindless. I'm waiting for the day that some of these 'artists' actually display some real talent and come up with some really emotive music as opposed to just falling to the lowest common denominator every time.

no offense taken
I've come to expect it
someone has to tell the world when the music they are being fed sucks
I have been appointed to perform the task
I like to listen to new music when it comes out
that's how I know I don't like it
tough job but I have an obligation to earth citizens
they shall be enlightened

Beyonce - Formation - Ruby - 04-05-2016

I listened to this Beyonce number without watching the video, which IMHO is always the acid test for anything that claims to be music. It lowered my happiness levels considerably, and to my mind is utterly devoid of grace. It got worse when I DID watch some of that clip - it’s all about ego and is insulting, degrading, gormless, and base. Very depressing.

I don’t know much about rap at all, but there seems to be a hierarchy within the genre, much the same as in any other. So in order to make a semi-informed comment, I’ve been trawling around listening to some excerpts from the perceived royalty of rhythm and poetry.

I can imagine how easy it is to get sucked in to this genre, especially if one is living in the society from which it originates; it’s almost a language of its own, and I expect it has given some people purpose. It’s a communications thing – the story of our lives. That said, it’s definitely not music to my ears, although I concede that there do seem to be some rappers who have a decent vocabulary and that they can be clever, and witty, and eloquent and make a point or two … unfortunately, it seems that with very few exceptions, an endless preponderance of bitches and hoes, and other farm and garden language, is inevitably part of the package.

So …. from the lofty heights of what I consider to be a privileged position, culturally and experientially speaking, this stuff appears to be mostly the expression of a group of people who feel angry, disenfranchised, who are plagued by violence in their societies, and who have hopelessly materialistic aspirations on every level.

Most worrying of all – it also gets lapped up by impressionable people who don’t have an ounce of discernment and who can, and do, retain and repeat every word verbatim (whereas I can’t even make out the vocals properly most of the time, which granted, might be an age thing. Lol!).

Maybe I’d feel differently given the same set of social circumstances, however, I’m not suddenly a proponent of rap, nor will I ever be – the closest I will get is listening to a bit of Everlast now and then.

good thought out response Ruby and well written girl!

back to the song...
ive finally got round to hearing it,
I always listen to a song first that way the music takes priority over the visual, then go back and watch the accompanying video...

sorry, but I didn't like this song at all, and the video didn't improve my impression of the song..

its the same old programmed sounds ive heard a million times, theres just no melody or tune that I could make out
and her voice was autotuned to the max, I could hear it as soon at she opened her mouth.

The reviewer in The Australian gave the album 4 &1/2 stars, so I guess that means all the other tracks must be friggin' fantastic!

Beyonce - Formation - Jerome - 05-05-2016

That's 4&1/2 out of a hundred!

The album has better songs. Formation is ridiculously overrated EVERYWHERE.

Formation is not a song. Its just random noises thrown at the wall to see what sticks. Its also disheartening to watch Beyonce use black culture to make her music popular. Most of the time she talks about women empowerment, uplifting the downtrodden parts of the black culture etc., but all her videos are only sexual, in one way or another.
