Super Singer Rebekah Eden Tackles Fantasy Lyrics With Orchestral Backing - Eugena - 13-09-2016
Take a trained opera singer (Rebekah Eden), give her inspiration from the books and films of J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings) and C.S. Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia) -- we know what was underneath her pillow as a child alongside that flashlight -- toss in love for both classical music and rockânâroll, and you have her new album (Rowing in Eden).
She wrote original lyrics for the songs inspired by Tolkien and Lewis, but she took other lyrics directly from poems by Emily Dickinson, William Butler Yeats and her friend Arthur Earl Jones. One of the most noteworthy moments on the recording is when Eden does the famous Led Zeppelin rocker âRamble Onâ (the only cover version here) as a ballad, of all things. But it works. You may remember that the Robert Plant lyrics reference The Lord of the Rings so it all ties in.
The music is a combination of small ensemble (guitars, keyboards and the occasional pedal steel or bagpipes) and small string orchestras (which gives a modern-classical feel to some pieces). Over the top of the instrumentation soars the powerful, many-octave voice of Rebekah Eden which makes the entire trip worthwhile. If occasionally you have trouble deciphering the lyrics, fortunately the CD includes the words so you can read along.
The production sparkles, the arrangements are tight though full-bodied, the musicians top-notch, and, oh, that voice.
