Paul McCartney 15 must hear tracks: - CRAZY-HORSE - 11-08-2020

as a big fan of Paul McCartney i believe he has made some incredible songs that radio dont play so over the last couple of months i have whittled down a long list of primarily album tracks from 1970-present that unless you have the album you probably wouldnt have heard.

some of these songs are rockers, some bluesy, others folkie or love songs.

hoping this thread gives Macca Laymen/Laywomen more of an insight into the pop craftsman that is Paul McCartney away from the usual hits we all know.

i will format each post to contains details of the album the track comes from/the wiki to the album or track, where able, give details on the song itself including lyrics and of course a link to the track itself.

Wiki:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flaming_Pie

first track is from his 1997 album "flaming Pie".
a favourite of his in my collection for sure.
a return to working with George Martin at the helm.
Jeff Lynne also produced some of the tracks.

it wasnt released as a single but a video was made for it.
it was written as an open letter to the children of a friend he knew who died of cancer,
subconsciously, it could have also been written with Linda in mind as at the time she was dying from cancer.
not your usual upbeat track by him.
its a very dour for Macca proving he can be more than serious when the need arises:

Bend, little willow
Wind's gonna blow you
Hard and cold tonight

Life, as it happens
Nobody warns you
Willow, hold on tight

Nothing's gonna shake your love
Take your love away
No one's out to break your heart
It only seems that way... hey

Sleep, little willow
Peace gonna follow
Time will heal your wounds

Grow to the heavens
Now and forever
Always came too soon

Little willow

Nothing's gonna shake your love
Take your love away
No one's out to break your heart
It only seems that way... hey

Bend, little willow
Wind's gonna blow you
Hard and cold tonight

Life, as it happens
Nobody warns you
Willow, hold on tight

Ah, little willow
Little willow

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_and_Mars_(Wings_album)

second selection is lifted from the 1975 Wings album "venus and mars".
"call me back again" is a brooding blues tune with a New Orleans feel to it overridden with a '60s soul feel.
it is reminiscent of Abbey Road's  "oh darlin' ".
track showcases Macca's vocal range and control.
loving the 'pleading' in his vocals and the wailing weep of the guitars which give the song its emotion.
this is a side of McCartney that is rarely heard but one he excels at.

Well when I, when I was just a little baby boy
Every night I would call, your number brought me joy
I called your house, every night since then
But I ain't never, no no never heard you calling me
Come on and call me back again
Come on call me back again
I've heard your name every night since then
But I ain't never, no no never
Heard you calling me
Come on and call me back again
Yeah all me back again.

Well when I, when I was
Just a little baby boy
Every night, every night I would call
Because your number brought me joy.

Oh I've called your name every night since then
But I ain't never, no, no, no, no, never heard you calling me
Come on and call me back again
Come on and call me back again

Come on and (call me back again)
Come on and call me
Ooh boo boo boo babe
Call me back again, ooh (call me back again)

(Call me back again)
Now won't you call me?
Call me back again
I ain't never heard you
So why don't you call me back again?

This is a very nice idea CH – thank you. I’ll be listening, even if not commenting on each one – need to educate myself as far as Macca goes – never bothered with him much.  Blush

Wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flowers_in_the_Dirt

this track is from his 1989 album Flowers In The Dirt.
a collaborative effort with Elvis Costello(well four tracks anyway).
remember the light poppy-breezy "the girl is mine" from Jackson's "thriller"?
well this one  is the "evil twin" to that with biting, cutting replies from Costello in this
no nonsense bitter song about jealousy that is more at home in the Costello songbook than Paul McCartney's.

She makes me go so wrong
(Yeah, you kept me awake, you know you did)
I've loved her oh-so long
(So why don't you come right out and say it, stupid?).

She makes me do things I don't want to do
I don't know why I should be telling you
I know that you want her too.

My intentions are quite sincere
(That's not what you said the other night)
And all you can do is sneer
(Go ahead and kid yourself, you're right).

She makes me do things I don't want to do
I don't know why I should be telling you
I know that you want her too
I've got a better chance than you do
I know that you want her too.

You're such a hopeless romantic
She told me you're so predictable and nice
She only did you a favor once or twice
Once or twice.

She makes me go so wrong
(So why don't you lie back and enjoy it?)
My conscience is clear and strong
(Yes, she says I'm just the boy for it).

She makes me do things I don't want to do
I don't know why I should be telling you
I know that you want her too
I know that you want her too
I know that you want her too

Wiki:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Driving_Rain

this one comes off his 2001 album Driving Rain.
a collection of sombre tracks not often associated with McCartney.
tracks reflect on his love for Linda who died a couple of years previously and others for his
new girl, Heather Mills.
basically a soft rock instrumental until the last twenty seconds when he warbles out a verse

I`m gonna fly to the moon
Check in outta space
Find me a suitable plot
Build myself a place
There I will stay
For a year and a day
Until the cares of my life blow away
And I will dance to a runcible tune
With the queen of my heart.....

Heather.

Wiki:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_Arguments

this one comes off his 2008 experimental collaboration album, Electric Arguments, with DJ/Producer Youth.
it was their third collaborative album released under the moniker The Fireman.
a folkie tune called "travelling light",
it bears no resemblance musically or vocally to what youd expect from McCartney but still has a subtle charm about it.

I ride on the white wind
High over the sand
I follow the bluebird
I follow the wise.

I glide on the green leaf
Not asking for more
I follow the white wind
I glide on the green leaf.

I swim in the blue sea
I walk on the sand
I fly through the blue sky
To wherever you land.

I ride on the white wind
To a far away shore
I follow the bluebird
To wherever she lands.

I'll be traveling tonight
Oh across the sea
Where she waits, she waits for me
Across the broken sea
From the sea
From the sea.

From across the endless sea
I'll be traveling tonight

[Image: 220px-PaulMcCartneyalbum_-_TugOfWar.jpg]

Wiki:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tug_of_War_(Paul_McCartney_album)

this one comes off his 1982 album Tug Of War.
was his first release since John's death and first time George Martin made a return to work with him
since the Beatles split.
Here Today, is his tribute in song to John Lennon.
it features acoustic guitar and strings, this one is classic McCartney, typical of his usual sounds
but nevertheless worth listening to.

And if I say I really knew you well
What would your answer be?
If you were here today
Ooo ooo ooo, here today.

Well, knowing you
You'd probably laugh and say
That we were worlds apart
If you were here today
Ooo ooo ooo, here today.

But as for me,
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more
Ooo ooo ooo, I love you, ooo.

What about the time we met?
Well, I suppose that you could say
That we were playing hard to get
Didn't understand a thing
But we could always sing

What about the night we cried?
Because there wasn't any reason
Left to keep it all inside
Never understood a word
But you were always there with a smile.

And if I say I really loved you
And was glad you came along
And you were here today
Ooo ooo ooo, for you were in my song
Ooo ooo ooo, here today
