NEW ALBUM: FIREFALL ~ Comet - Ruby - 26-12-2020 FIREFALL ~ Comet Listened to the lead track “Way Back When” when they first released it a month or so back, which to be perfectly frank was underwhelming to me, at the time. Finally got around to the full album, and actually, it was a really happy listen - thank goodness. Just what I felt like today - easy peasy. This lot have been around forever and made some really fab, memorable country rock songs. The line-up has changed a bit over the years but Jock Bartley remains head honcho and some of the members are longstanding – Mark Andes and Sandy Ficca, for example, despite a hiatus or two along the way. The band hasn't made an album in 25 years apparently, and I don’t think I’ve even heard anything of theirs that was released after 1980 ish. Of a similar persuasion to the Eagles, for anyone who hasn’t heard them yet. Easy listening/soft rock/country rock – there are a couple of tracks that stand out more than others, and they play so comfortably together (or not together which is more likely to be the case in these strange times! LOL!) – a pleasure to listen to musos who are so at home with what they do. Not going to knock anyone’s socks off, but a sterling effort as far as I’m concerned. Mark Andes was with Spirit up to 1970, and he was with them when Randy California wrote “Nature’s Way” which Spirit included in their Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus. Andes and Timothy B Schmidt share vocals on this new rendition of “Nature’s Way”, and it’s perfectly executed IMHO. They haven’t radically altered it and got too clever – the vibe is exactly right. Doobie Brothers’ John McFee has a guest spot here too - pedal steel guitar, acoustic guitar, baritone guitar …. (And this is the Spirit original in case anyone cares to take a listen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsTK2LHZKPQ) “Before I Met You” ... |
