NEW ALBUM: DAVID GRAY ~ Skellig - Ruby - 19-02-2021 DAVID GRAY ~ Skellig Seems as though David Gray has found his way back home. This is a totally different kettle of fish to the abysmal Gold in a Brass Age although there’s still a bit too much of a muddy bass sound in places, for my liking – I don’t think it adds to the whole, but aside from that, he’s on form with clever lyrics and with lyricism. This is probably somewhere between Mutineers and Life in Slow Motion, I’d say. He really isn’t your regular songwriter – somehow he manages to deliver songs that are structured in the tried and trusted tradition, but which don’t sound as though they are (pardon the clumsiness of expression). It’s all growed up is what this is; dreamy, restrained and carefully put together. There is no ranting and raving – it’s still and calm. Hmmm - perhaps a little rant wouldn’t have gone amiss! Much like many other musicians, he’s obviously in reflective and philosophical mood. I can’t say I’m entirely in love with the album – yet. Need to get to know it a bit better – there’s a lot to absorb on a first listen and I haven't had the time to focus on everything he's saying. |
