A Desert Island Idea ! - gryphon - 14-04-2010

An idea which I have been looking at and which might be useful to MD :

In the UK the second longest running radio program is a program called “ Desert Island Discs” it has run from 1942 until the present day..................I think that that says that it must have some kind of long standing appeal !
It is a simple format that has worked well for 68 years ........each week a celebrity is invited to take part in the following:
“ Guests are invited to imagine themselves cast away on a desert island, and to choose eight pieces of music, originally gramophone records, to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life. Excerpts from their choices are played or, in the case of short pieces, the whole work.[2] At the end of the programme they choose the one piece they regard most highly. They are then asked which book they would take with them; they are automatically given the Complete Works of Shakespeare and either the Bible or another appropriate religious or philosophical work. gamophone records, to take with them; discussion of their choices permits a review of their life.”
Now this format was devised some 68 years ago and shows some signs of age but I think the idea could be used on MD
:
The format of eight favourite tracks could be used and for each one the castaway chooses the tracks and we add a youtube link to ach one so that we can all share in the music ( I think it could be optional to explain why you chose the track as we are on a forum not a radio station but.............)
The choice of one book could be made and placed on the thread ( The what are you reading thead has been popular and informative over its time)

The castaway is always asked if they would try to survive on the island or attempt an escape and if so how ( There have been discussions about how to give people ownership of the MD site and I feel that this kind of discussion and maybe others generated by this would give a sense of insite into members and stimulate discussion)
You are allowed one luxury and again you might like to say why you ant one of these on a desert island
People are asked the question “ How would you cope with the aspects of loneliness in this situation “
( Again this is stimulation for debate).

Finally they are asked “ If you could only take one of the tracks which would it be and why ?)
I think the ideas here could e interesting if brought to MD
IN addition , it could address our problems with bringing in members and keeping them:

Maybe new members could be invited to participate after say so many posts( This would allow us to get to know them quickly and integrate them better into MD)
Perhaps we could use it as a way of celebrating say 500 or 1000 posts.
Maybe the moderates could take part and in that way make themselves a bit more known to others ?
Maybe members would just like to take part anyway?Cool

Righty, no youtube links, but hey...

Music

- Pink Floyd - Dogs Not my absolute fave Floyd song, but a very close second. Plus it's nearly 20 minutes long, so lots of bang for its' buck.

- Kate Bush - The Ninth Wave Another very long piece. I've always liked her music, but this is a league above the rest of her catalog IMV

- Radiohead - Paranoid Android Where did this come from ?? Single handedly rendered almost all Progressive Rock obsolete at a stroke. To be fair this could have been any one of a number of songs from OK Computer, but this song is a standout.

- Elvis Costello - Pump it up I've always like this song, but it's grown on me bigtime in recent years. Sums up for me what's exciting about Rock & Roll.

- Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven The song that turned me on to the band. Growling guitars, and Kim Deal's bass also reminding me of why I like R&R.

- Led Zeppelin - Since I've Been Loving You LZ at their understated best IMHO. Page's guitar throughout this song is superb, and the squeaky bass drum pedal always makes me smile...

- Jesus & Mary Chain - Catchfire Everything I like about JAMC wrapped up in a single song; sleaze, scorched-earth guitars, Jim Reid's hushed vocals, and a narcotic rhythm. Best played very loud...

- Bob Marley - Is This Love ? Not the most profound of BM's work, but he never wrote a more upful song IMHO.

Book

- Joseph Heller - Catch 22
I'm due to read this soon, so this'll do nicely. Absurd black comedy set during WWII. Some of the funniest writing I've encountered.

Luxury Item

- My Hi-fi
With only 8 songs to listen to, I might as well listen to quality...

Would I try to escape ? Of course. I need people around to be happy.

How would I do it ? Teleporting of course...

That's my favourite Pixies song! Cool list Tiggi.
