Record Store Day - Music Head - 15-04-2010

What is it?

I have seen the term referred to in various articles.
Never with any background as to where it originated or what it is.
Somebody fill me in please.

Don't know, but it sounds like either a hapless industry attempt to lure customers back, or a survival initiative from the independants.

Record Store Day - gryphon - 16-04-2010

According to our papers here in The Netherlands: This takes place on 17 April and involves selected records stores in a country:

On the agenda are

  • Album signings by bands
  • In Store Activities
  • Meet and Greets
  • Very Exclusive products will be available
  • Free CD of breaking acts
  • Show cases
seems to involve large record store chainsCool

Independent record stores also participate. Criminal Records, the independent I mention (but not by name) in the other thread on record stores, always has a big shindig. As Gryphon says there are exclusive deals, in-store performances, giveaways, etc. They pitch it as a "celebration" of your local record store but of course it is an effort to make money and generate interest. They are a business!

So this is a U.S. thing too?

I thought it was just European.

I believe it is worldwide. I know Criminal Records, and all the other record stores here in Atlanta have participated the last few years.
