What is the draw of pop music? - Erixouther - 23-06-2010 (NOTE: THIS IS PURELY MY OPINION, POSTED WITH THE INTENTION OF CAUSING A DEBATE/WHATEVER) Why do people listen to pop music? I can't stand it. I find it repetitive, boring, lyrically and instrumentally talentless, and often poorly assembled. I had the FM radio taken out of my car in favor of an AUX line-in jack (to plug my PSP into). I can't stand radio pop. I'm defining "pop" as: -pretty much anything on the radio -things like Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Kesha, Miley Cyrus, countless others -one-hit wonders (for the most part) -Britney Spears-ish things -most rap/r&b (Beyonce-ish stuff, Kanye West, w/e) anything you'd hear on the radio, from any time period. I'd much rather listen to a half-hour song from Dream Theater; it's instrumentally brilliant, well-written, exciting, and entertaining, even if it's a little lyrically numb. or Tool, which is totally out-there and weird, but still amazingly well put-together and full of talent. The way I see it, anyone can sit in front of a keyboard, poke some notes, make a drum-machine beat, insert some "risque" lyrics, auto-tune (shudder) and make thousands of dollars - all while bands with actual TALENT are starting to disappear, because all the market money is going to "what the kids like". I think "the kids" should be more educated about the wonders of the musical world, in ALL its facets... or the radio/record labels should rethink their definition of "the kids"!!! Thoughts? Why do YOU listen to pop music? Where's the talent in it? Will you give something else a try? etc. What is the draw of pop music? - Music Head - 23-06-2010 I would agree with you in general but I always thought WFNX was a cool station. I listen to pop music so I know I don't like it. What is the draw of pop music? - pennywill - 23-06-2010 There is lots of pop music that's good, it's the radio stations that suck. They play the same 20 songs over and over and over and over and over (well you get the idea). Pop music is like junk food, sometimes it's really great to sit down to a big sloppy burger and revel in the grease and deliciousness of it all, but you feel ill later and can't live on it. What is the draw of pop music? - blooberd - 25-06-2010 pop music is just that: popular music. it is not a genre in the sense that the music is actually limited by a particular characteristic. in a thinking and discerning population, popular music would be a diverse and exciting selection of music, and, by virtue of the fact that it has been deemed popular (ie. a lot of people like it), you should find that it helps most people find good music. nowadays, though, it seems that pop music has become a reflection of the culture we live in. nobody thinks anymore. we are a culture that wants to be told what is normal and cool, and nobody wants to step out of this bubble for fear of being labeled different, or God forbid "not cool". so when the main goal becomes a search for whatever everybody else is doing, rather than a search for good music, the whole pop music system becomes flawed, and somebody else (ie. the bad people in charge) get to choose what is 'good' and 'cool' because nobody is actually listening to music anymore, they are spending their time making sure they are wearing the right clothes and dancing the right way and saying the right thinks, like, ohmigod, whatever. but as far as i can tell, we are not that bad off. we did lose control for a while, but there is an underground movement happening. many people have jumped off the pop music bandwagon, and are turning off their radios and televisions. maybe it's not yet the majority, but i'm thinking both factions are pretty well evening out. the majority deems what is popular, and can guide the ears of those who have been deluded by those bad people in charge (it is not their fault someone built a brick wall all the way around them and they can't see outside). we can take back pop music. remember michael jackson? stevie wonder? this was pop music. its face changes. if we change the way the world listens to music, we change the underlying messages that reach people's minds, and we change the world. check out zach deputy. he is a one man music machine, and he covers all sorts of genres. i am hoping he takes over and saves pop music. nobody does not like it. lots of stuff to find and download for free on bandcamp. the key here is to find all the best music out there and share it with enough people until it takes over majority rule. bam, new pop music regime. world = different. how powerful What is the draw of pop music? - kerry101 - 26-06-2010 I am a pop fan, and i can say that generally, the songs i listen to are upbeat, fun, and make you feel good. Which i guess is something alot of people strive for. Musical taste is a personal thing, and is all about learning through life and exploring enough to have a taste of everything, and while not be to everyone's individual taste, be given enough consideration for an entire genre to be written off. In some cases, its not that the whole type of music is noty liked, but that the artists that you have been exposed to is the thing that is what is not liked-I was surprised to discover the other evening that i was having a great time listening to drum and Bass, and then ventured into listening to Radiohead, and that was a whole new experience for me...and not a totally unpleasant one. ![]() the radio stations i find do not play the whole range of a genre, just what they have chosen, and then they play that continuously-and with the radio stations, mainly in the uk-as thats what i know, the artists/record companies buy onto that station, so it all comes down to the money... i know when we were working with Mark (Read) last year to get his song Peace at last played, they all loved the song, but the money wasn't behind it, and so we couldn't get it played... and so the artist signed to sony became well known and Mark didn't.

What is the draw of pop music? - Tiggi - 28-06-2010 ^ Point well made...:bounce: What is the draw of pop music? - Erixouther - 28-06-2010 Interesting stuff... I never really thought about it that way. I guess I don't hate it because it's pop; I hate it because it's meaningless. If there were deep, heartfelt, meaningful pop songs out there, I guess I wouldn't hate them. Thanks, everybody =] What is the draw of pop music? - pennywill - 29-06-2010 Totally unrelated...Tiggy, your piggy with boots is TOO CUTE  What is the draw of pop music? - Tiggi - 29-06-2010 ^ He's a micropig by the name of Clive, apparently.
