....and im not refering to the so called soul nowadays or 'white boy soul from the 1980s, im talking 'real' soul from the 1960s and 70s from the 'atlantic' 'stax' and 'motown' labels

ok, its probably universally agreed that aretha is 'the queen of soul', you wont get any arguements from me on that one, but i do like and listen to mary wells more than i listen to aretha.

as for male singers i cant go past:
soloman burke
otis redding(this man 'feels' his songs)
wilson picket
and of course the great marvin gaye('whats going on' is one of the greatest albums ever)

as for groups, the 'four tops' are unbeatable

i want your thoughts and input, might jog my memory to others i have in my collection

good topic.
so many good ones for me in that era, unlike todays r&b which I hate most of.

My list would include:
Al Green
Stevie Wonder
Temptations
Supremes
Curtis Mayfield
James Brown
Ray Charles
Sam Cooke
Isaac Hayes
Gladys Knight & The Pips
Little Anthony & The Imperials
Martha & The Vandellas
Smokey Robinson & The Miracles
Junior Walker & The All Stars
Edwin Starr
Percy Sledge
Joe Tex
Lou Rawls
Barry White
Bill Withers

Agree with many of the above, in particular Otis, and I'd add:

Early Millie Jackson (Before she became a novelty act)

&

Carla Thomas.
