Week Thirty Three...............Screaming Females.......Castle Talk - gryphon - 12-09-2010 Castle Talk ………………………………….Screaming Females
An interesting album which demonstrates musical competence but, not musical imagination. The cover give some insight into what to expect. Screaming Females are an independent rock band, often labeled as a punk rock band, fromNew Brunswick, New Jersey. They have released three full length albums, entitled Baby Teeth, What If Someone Is Watching Their T.V.?, and Power Move. They self-released their first two albums [1] and signed to Don Giovanni Records to release Power Move, which has received much critical acclaim.[2] The band features Marissa Paternoster on guitar and vocals, Jarrett Dougherty on drums, and King Mike on bass. Thanks Wiki ! Track One Laura and Marty : Screaming guitar and running bass get us off to a start with this one. Nasal vocals complete the picture. I think we are in the punk realm but I’m not quite sure. Anyway Laure and Marty went to a party ! Track Two I Don’t Mind It : This is guitar based semi-punk and is not without appeal …………It engages the mind at a reasonable level and does make for reasonable listening. It has a good hook and stays in the mind when heard. Track Three Boss: A really interesting guitar drums beginning, gives way to a sharp guitar, so far this band seem in charge of things ! The cod Marlene Dietrich vocals add charm and appeal. Don’t really know why but at this point I’m thinking of Joy Division? Track Four Normal: Strident guitar work at times and excited vocals make this track race along , there is a echo of Eton Rifles by The Jam in there somewhere ? Track Five A New Kid : A little mechanical, this track seems to be a simple process at heart , nothing outstanding or novel but it does function at some sort of level. Track Six Fall Asleep: By the time one reaches the sixth track, it becomes apparent that the band is competent but, not highly imaginative in their approach to music making. Track Seven Wild : Screaming females were not really able to convince me that they were wild screaming females with this track. Track Eight Nothing At All: More of the same here . Track Nine Sheep : Guitar and vocals mingle to provide a hard edged track , The Dietrich vocals carry the narrative………………………………. Track Ten Deluxe: Almost demo like feel to this track, light skipping rhythm prevails and an echo that seems as if it was recorded badly in a toilet. Track Eleven Ghost solo: The final track, a simple fuzz guitar based pop rack is what is in store for us. Not a bad album but, after a while they did become tiring for me! Lyrically they are a bit light weight but overall it is a passable effort.
Week Thirty Three...............Screaming Females.......Castle Talk - BigHairHurts - 01-12-2010 Great band. I really enjoyed their previous albums Baby Teeth and Power Move, though I agree that they get stuck in their sound a little too often...I haven't heard Castle Talk yet but I'll check it out. |
