Good Camera for Gigs? - Thraak - 13-09-2010

After my spiritual experience at Robin Trower on Sat, I have a lot more concerts planned for the near future including The Unwinding Hours next month, (possibly) Less Than Jake in November, Cast @ Barrowlands in November & Roxy Music in January!

Sadly, my shitty Nikon L22 camera (originally purchased for an elegant trip to a cottage in Fife) is unworthy for concerts & need some good advice on certain cameras that hold up well in those environments. What do you guys use?

I guess that I feel that I can not ay buy this camera and you will get excellent results...............I believe that the results come more from the person and what they do with the camera ..............

I used in the days of film get good results from a Pentax K 1000 with a fast zoom lens some 400 ASA film..........and a bit of good luck.[Image: attachment.php?attachmentid=432]

I can suggest the following....................If you can find the organizer and try to get a press pass ..........it can be done if you are honest and tell them you are a keen photographer...............the only thing I found as that they have asked to have first refusal if you get anything they want.( Often they pay you !) IF you can get this then you can get access to the back stage positions etc ................often it only works for smaller gigs but worth ago.

If you can try to get access to the sound check....................can also be done if you can get the right contact and charm them............at this you can speak to the band too and sometimes if they feel lkie it you can get them to co-operatate for some good action.

If not then if it is a small gig you can get in close top the side of the stage give clues to good angles and if you are luck they might invite you into areas others can not .

If you get close into the artist try to chat with them...................I have one or two excellent shots of one of my idols actually playing in my kitchen !!!!!

Wow man, thats pretty awesome. I'm not sure I'd get a press pass to be honest! I'm looking for something inbetween what I've already got and what you posted. I didnt recognise the band by the way, who is it?

The press pass bit you can do...its all about being able to ask that's all ..............often the people can be really helpful and kind ...............there are some difficult people ........but the thing is to try !

The bands

1) Is a German band called Harmony Glen ................taken at a outside festival in Wassenburg Germany

2) Is my favorite band Magna Carta taken at the Carre Theatre Amsterdam ( It is the Dutch Albert Hall )

You can have great success if you try, they guy in the blue Shirt is Chris Simpson ( Who has been my idol for over 30 years )...............I have photos of him playaing in my kitchen...........all because I was bold enough to ask !:nod:Cool

I tend to take snaps at gigs, but because lugging a decent camera around can be tiresome, I bought a priceyish Sony Ultra-compact.

Fits handily in a pocket, but certainly has plenty of limitations. I think you're prolly looking for something substantially better than I use...

I'm considering buying one at end of month & currently have one of these two in mind after seeing some very impressive example videos on avforums.

Paul Weller is well renound for being an arse in person so I would personally give that one a miss. Looks like I'm gonna go for that Panasonic.
