Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Artanaxes - 12-01-2011 First, I want to make it clear that is not a genre of music I listen to on a regular basis--not because I'm anti-Christian, but because generally the music is so message-heavy the music is secondary and often very bland and uncreative (didn't used to be that way--cut my teeth on the magnificent Mahalia Jackson!) But even so I'm surprised it has no category here. Just want to point out one group that in my opinion rises far above the crowd in contemporary Christian music--that group is Third Day. Check out their LIFT UP YOUR FACE...powerful...moving...inventive within a great tradition..just great music, message aside. Lead singer reminds me of a younger and vocally smoother Joe Cocker... Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - gryphon - 12-01-2011 I guess I can speak for the team here as I've been involved for quite a while The category you mention has only a minority appeal , I once suggested a new age one but experience shows that the traffic would be minimal so I think that is the answer you seek Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - CRAZY-HORSE - 12-01-2011 Artanaxes Wrote:First, I want to make it clear that is not a genre of music I listen to on a regular basis--not because I'm anti-Christian, but because generally the music is so message-heavy the music is secondary and often very bland and uncreative (didn't used to be that way--cut my teeth on the magnificent Mahalia Jackson!) But even so I'm surprised it has no category here. you could always put any comments/posts on Gospel/Christian' music in the 'general music' or 'world music' threads we offer. Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Tiggi - 12-01-2011 Gryphon's comments above are correct. About a year ago we restructured the genre boards, and decided to restrict the number to 10-12. This resulted in bundling genres together, and some have commented that the bundling is a little clunky. Gospel was originally bundled in with - I believe - Soul/R&B & Rap/Hip Hop as part of the black American musical heritage. Both Jazz, & Blues were grouped seperately. Gospel was then dropped, since it was felt that it was a minority interest, and that the genre titles were too "busy". Christian music, and New Age were also considered, but were left out as minority interests. My view is that Christian music can be incorporated into other genres, dependant on its' musical style, and that there was no need to have a separate category for it. I'm quite a fan of Reggae, but this went the same way and has been bundled with the "Folkie" genres under Country, Folk, & World Music. I guess the lesson I learned is that trying to accomodate everyone's views isn't always the best way to go, and that executive decisions are sometimes necessary... Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Jerome - 12-01-2011 I can see why you structured the genres the way you did and for the most part I think you're right. I have to say that reggae does not slot in with country at all. To be quite honest I don't know if it slots in with anything at all. Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Tiggi - 13-01-2011 ^ The Country, Folk, & World Music grouping is an attempt to collect Folk Music in the broadest sense together. I'd contend that Reggae is Jamaican Folk music, and as such fits quite well. Plus it would sit well with World Music. As I said above, a degree of compromise was necessary. Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Jerome - 13-01-2011 I stand corrected. Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Tiggi - 14-01-2011 ^ Jerome, I hope you didn't think my last post was a bit stroppy. It reads a bit that way, but that wasn't the intention... Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Music Head - 14-01-2011 I hope us regulars know hoiw to interpret each other by now. Why no forum for Gospel/Christian? - Jerome - 14-01-2011 Not at all, Tiggi. Hell it takes a lot more than that to piss me off. Don't worry - I can read between the lines and what you say makes sense anyway. I'm far too old to be worried about stuff like that. One condition though - with a surname like Disney I have been called every nickname in the book, and I don't mind. But I absolutely refuse to respond to 'dopey' or 'goofey'! |
