On All things must pass - corel24 - 08-06-2011

I'm a bit bored so i just wanted to start a conversation with someone about this record, but none of my friends are near, so i'll start by saying that it is the best solo record by any beatle

interseting question coral24, im pretty sure you'll get a few opinions on this one and in especially waiting for those of Gryphon, our resident Beatle-phile!!!

it was IMO the 'most complete' debut solo album by any of the Fab Four and it cetainly showed that George was capable of writing more than one or two great tracks on an album...which as we know was pretty much all he ever got on Beatles albums.
whether it was the 'best solo' work by any ex-Beatle is something i would not dare to say but it holds its own against Lennon's "imagine" album and several of Macca's best albums.

don't forget Lennon's Plastic Ono Band album!

I think this is a hard one to call.......................................ATMP shows a very creative song writer who has been bottled up during the beatle years , there is an man who is also in a very spiritual phase, from these points of view it is a strong album. The experiences of the Beatle times and Harrison's time with Dylan also show . Add in the guitar experience George has then there are plenty of plus points. However, when listening George's vocal weakness comes across..................now why should that matter? Well this is up against one of the all time emotion revealing albums John Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band...........................So although George was a more satisfied person and was on form from a songwriting point of view it was John who was the more creative and soul bearing person. As I believe that music is a communication of emotion situation I've got to turn George down on this front and go to John!

I really like ATMP, but think it would have been an excellent double instead of triple album.

This album soundtracked an excellent couple of weeks on hols in Gran Canaria a few years back.

I have a book on recording techniques etc. and in it George Martin stated that Paul Mc was the most creative of all the Beatles. Makes no difference to me either way but it is as clear as day (judging from discussions about who did what) that John relied heavily on Paul to close out ideas and 'complete' the material. Any thoughts on this?

A few thoughts on this ............

George Martin was a trained musician and using that yard stick he could see that Paul was the most likely pupil on that front..................therefore I think George was prone to
thinking that from a classical musician;s point of view. It is also true that to George's mind Paul was willing to listen and work with George M on that basis...............

John..............Lets look at this , Paul is lyrically and literally inferior to John .. Classical scholars from the literary world had the same regard for john's writing as George Martin had for Paul's musical ability.............so there are two points of view.

It seems clear from the literature that John could have difficulty finishing things and Paul may have stepped in here....................but Paul has the weakness of not knowing the difference beteewn his best work and things that it would be better to shelve .........John on the other had did.......................It is also not to be be belived that John quickly grew bored with things and that made him an inferior musician........to the contrary...........in the early solo years it was John who produced he musically supirior works and sounded more complete musically .......that eluded Paul until around Band on the Run.................So I guess George Martin's views are true as regards Paul but on the other hand I don't thing George was saying that Paul was abetter musician that John or vice versa , it was just the slant he put on it being from his background....CoolCool
