Dark classical composers? - OKCATHY1 - 27-06-2011

I love classical and rock music, I've always liked rock music that is dark/melancholic/eerie, like bands such as Joy Division, The Chameleons, Echo and The Bunnymen, King Crimson, Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Smiths, etc...etc.

Can you recommend me some composers whose works are dark/melancholic/eerie and the name of the works?
Thanks everyone.

Hey there. I've just recently started listening to a lot of music from the Renaissance and early Baroque period. I find a lot of these tunes to be melancholic and rather dark. One of my favorite composers from this time, John Dowland I think will fit pretty well into your description. Here is a link to my favorite piece by him, "Flow My Tears".

Classical Guitar Solo:

Not sure if you like it with or without vocals, so I provided two links. The vocals are in English, so it can be fun to listen to. Here's a link to the lyrics,

Also, as far as rock goes, definately check out Opeth. Their damnation album sounds rather fitting. Check out these couple songs:

Enjoy!

Glad you mentioned Opeth !!! Damnation is awesome as well as any of the four albums by Agalloch !!!

Try some dark ambient groups like Lull, Hammock, Aghast ( very dark), Jon Hopkins, Ulrich Schnauss for now !

Johann Johannson is classical
Bohern and der Club of Gor is jazz or progressive

Try both

If you are looking for "dark" classical music, you just have to look around. There are many composers who have done dark pieces. Overall, Wagner was pretty "dark" in many of his works.

Here is one I think you all would really enjoy. It certainly contains that "dark" element and is a great classical piece. It is The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky.

I like the Stravinsky. I don't listen to much classical music, but I could swear I've heard it before. Either that or it reminds me of something.
