Record Store Day This Saturday! - jroknbok - 19-04-2012

This post isn't about music per say. More about mediums of listening to music. This Saturday is the fifth annual Record Store Day, when independent record stores around the country try to prove the importance of them. Personally I love record stores. I love the sense of community in record stores and honestly I love having physical forms of music.

I just watched a documentary called "I Need That Record! The Death (Or Possible Survival) of Independent Record Stores." Anyone else seen it? It was very interesting. Obviously from the title it is about the struggle of record stores. It talked a lot about how the internet is hurting them. Mainly because of digital forms of music but also because people are developing this comfortability of interacting online, taking face to face social interaction out of their lives. Don't get me wrong I love this website, there are some serious music lovers on here that share their great knowledge. Anyway I'm just wondering is there anybody else that still gets a thrill of going to record stores to pick up either a CD or a vinyl? Do like the social interaction at these stores? Are you worried about the alarming number of record stores being forced out of business?

Lastly! Anyone going to their local record store for Record Store Day? What are you planning to pick up?? If anyone is interested in the collectibles being released you can check it out on the Record Store Day website.

Thanks!!

"The record store. Where true fandom begins. It's the soul of discovery, and the place where you can always return for that mighty buzz. The posters. The imports. The magazines. The discerning clerks, paid in vinyl, professors of the groove. Long live that first step inside, when the music envelopes you and you can't help it. You walk up to the counter and ask the question that begins the journey -- "what is that you're playing?" Long live the record store, and the guys and girls who turn the key, and unlock those dreams, every day."

I still think it's funny, but it should be a national holiday.

I love going into my favorite CD and record store and asking the question what's new and exciting or what's that you're playing? I also like to see what others are buying.

Unfortunately the digital world is taking over! Disposable music due to the tremendous onslaught of thousands of artists and several genres/sub-genres!

Well now I know what I'm doing this Saturday Smile

I've only got one record store near me (Out at school. Apparently there's one near my house, but I've never checked it out yet. Street's too busy for me to fuss around attempting to find it.), and its not really that great. It focuses more on DVD's. But, I'm excited to go for Record Store Day and hopefully keep them in business for a bit longer (And make sure they know people are still buying music). I have pretty low expectations based on my coupe trips in there, but, I've been waiting for this day for most of the semester. Smile

Totally I forgot I posted this, but cool to hear from you all. Hope you all enjoyed the holiday and managed to snag some good ones. I unfortunately overslept and miss the hype by about 2 hours. Apparently all the really good and limited edition stuff was snatched up within the first hour of the store being open. So I just bought a few CDs.

And SteveO I'm totally with you, I love asking whats new or what's good. I never used to be into punk and just the other day I asked the owner of the store what are some good punk bands, because he is huge into the genre. After discussing what I like and dislike he narrowed it down and pinpointed bands that I ended up really liking. I love it.

Also glad to hear there are still many supporters of Record Store Day. I'll check out the other forums to see what you guys bought!!
