recent acclaimed bands that got commercial success - zabrak - 20-06-2012

hello there!

Can anybody help me, by listing bands that received critical acclaim & also received commercial success as well?

I'm not that into Metal (yet), so the only band that I can think of is Mastodon.

Oh, I suppose I'm talking about bands in North America. Since there's an incredible amount of acclaimed metal bands in Europe that received mainstream success

Check out The Black Keys, they may not be metal, but they've definately achieved a lot of success in their career.

I'll recommend a few bands:

1. Name 2. Album 3. Comment

Gojira - The Link (Complex time signatures and environmentally themed lyrics with lots of death metal vocal stylings)
Ghost - Opus Eponymous (melodic NWOBHM styled music with clean vocals, very catchy sound)
Devin Townsend - Heavy - Deconstruction &/or Light - Ghost (wildly talented guitarist/ vocalist whose work runs encompasses a wide variety of musical styles)
Volbeat - Beyond Hell/ Above Heaven (Metallica meets Elvis meets Johnny Cash Meets Social Distortion - hard rock with a nod to the classics)Voivod - Nothing Face (The weird and wonderful world of Voivod, no one else like them out there - I picked an older album as it has the Pink Floyd cover Astronomy Domine and that makes me smile)Agalloch - The Mantle ( Dark, slow and heavy music, probably the most critically aclaimed of my list - pagan themed)Borknagar - Origin (I picked their acoustic album as it shows their songs in a decidedly unmetal format and the songs still sound very good - another pagan themed band)
Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math (I believe if you look in the archives Music Head reviewed this one a ways back, Thanks MH!! Intense band with every note felt, I love this band)
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia OR Deadwing (My preference is In Absentia for an intro but Many will say Deadwing is a better intro , either will suffice for this dark and proggy band - complex but very listenable music)
Gotye - Making Mirrors (recommendation from Crazy-Horse - an album that will get continued play, clever pop that WILL stay in your head forever!)

I hope you find something in here that you like.

(I used the idea of recent to mean they are still active and recording, some of these bands have been around for a while though)
