US Presidency - Tiggi - 21-09-2008

Following some recent comments about the above, thought it would be interesting to canvass opinion, particularly from the American Contingent.

So, McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden, and why ??

Not that it has much to do with my opinion, but I think the world needs a break from Republican stylee foreign policy, and it seems that the US needs a break from Republican economic policy.

Go Barack...

If I'm given those two choices I'll go with Obama/Biden. I like Obama mostly for this reason: he has laid out in clear steps about what he plans to do to help the economy and the environment. All I hear from McCain is vague statements about "cutting pork" and how he's going to "reform Washington".

To be honest I'm considering voting for either the Green party ticket (McKinney/Clemente) or Nader/Gonzalez because I think Obama doesn't go far enough on some issues.

Are you big on environmentalism, Jon ?

If so you must be in a bit of a minority in the States ?!

US Presidency - JonG - 24-09-2008

I should have said "energy" not environment. I heard a speech Obama gave about his plan to get us off fossil fuels. But yes I care about the environment. A lot of Americans do. Because of Bush II Americans have a certain image. But remember that despite being elected twice he has the lowest approval rating of any US president. And he shouldn't have been elected in 2000. Al Gore won that election. There is also evidence of voter fraud in 2004.

Yes, Jon, I'm with you on Dubya. Can't think of a world leader I've disliked more during my lifetime. Of course that's not a realistic statement given the countless despots that have existed around the world, but I have more venom for him because I've probably heard a lot more about him:

"The problem with the French is that they have no word for entrepreneur..." FFS !!

Didn't mean to stereotype your nation, but those gas-guzzling motors have got to go !!

Check out the Kevin Spacey movie Recount, the story of the 2000 Florida election fiasco.

Although I knew how it ended i.e. the US Supreme Court ruled in favour of George W, it kept me on the edge of my seat. Who knows how different the world would be now if Gore had won?

My choice, which would never make it into office in a million years (after 36 years of trying), would be Ralph Nader. His policies are a little too liberal, I guess. I feel that Obama, like any liberal, is too willing to walk on eggshells with his policies due to the fact that so many people in the United States consider themselves (neo)conservatives, while the liberals feel they have to settle for less than they deserve.

It seems that Obama/Biden are building a head of steam. Is this going to last, or will the electorate bottle it & settle for more of the same ??

It is frustrating that two party politics seems firmly established on both sides of the pond (and elsewhere), since this tends to marginalise minority views to a disproportionate extent.

The UKs' next election is still some way off, but I think it could be very interesting as well.

As a modern history and politics graduate, maybe I should actually care about this but I don't read the newspapers, watch the news or have any interest whatsoever in politics. I don't avoid this stuff - just don't go looking for it.

So in this case, Obama seems to be the good guy - so I suppose I hope he wins - but whatever the American people want to do as a sovereign nation -well - good luck to them.

- however thanks to this thread (and wikipedia) I now know who Ralph Nader is, so that's good I guess.

In summary - I'm commenting to say that I don't have a comment.

I'm strongly considering doing a write-in for Nader. I voted for him in 2000. I should have voted for him in 2004 instead of Kerry. Nader is not on my state's ballot so if I go with him it'll be a write in. I have to vote early though, which sucks. It means a trip downtown. Not fun.
