What are your thoughts on bands that consist of one female amongst males? - andy_88 - 29-04-2013 Hi, I'm writing a piece on the role of women within music, especially on the popular band member line-up of a single female amongst a number of guys and would like to know your thoughts on the topic. Bands such as Paramore, No Doubt, Evanesecence and The Black Eyed Peas have all adopted this line up, although are the women in these groups seen as equal to the men? Seen as an object of male attention/ in a sexual way? Or are they truly valued for their talent, regardless of specified instrument? Also any attitudes on feminism? Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks Andy What are your thoughts on bands that consist of one female amongst males? - PennyLane - 13-05-2013 I am not sure there is much of a "thing" here. I don't know why it is any different. There is a woman who just happens to be in a band with men. I don't think there is an agenda. Are you saying that if there is a woman lead singer it is automatically an issue? SHe is either sub-par even though she is the lead singer or she was only put there because she is a female? Because I don't think anyone thinks of it like that. A lot of bands were formed out people who knew each other and it just os happens the girl could sing or rock it out! I don't think fans or onlookers look at is in a feministic sort of way. The funny thing is I think that men listen to bands with all male members more than female ones. Not because they are better, but because sometimes they are more easily relatable to. So I don't think sticking a female in the front is to get some male fans. To reiterate,I think people can make this into something it's not, because people like to do that. But I think that it just is what it is. JA wouldn't be the same without Grace. Other examples of strong talented women ...Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Nicks, Debbie Harry, Florence Welsh,..... Maybe there is a female/male attraction but as Penny says ...so be it...that's the way we are. This would mean if you are a fan of metal with a lead female vocalist. |
