Maceo Parker
#1
If you're familiar with the sax, you've heard of him; if you've listened deeply to Black music in the last 50 years, you've heard him. The backbone of James Brown's orchestras, having 3 tours of duty with him (on 10 CDs in 24 years). He's 71 and still doing it mightily. On his own, he's done 16 albums in 32 years and been a sideman to nearly everybody important in funk music, including strong times with Prince and Bootsy Collins: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maceo_Parker His only turkey albums were earlier on when he was finding his way as a leader and a 1990 EP sort-of tribute to JB (For All the King's Men)...and even this is its own kind of fun: http://www.allmusic.com/album/for-all-th...0000690166 Full discog: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/maceo-par...iscography << included for the write-ups and ratings. His 2010 DVD with a German TV ork is a killer (a Ray Charles tribute) but pricey--worth looking up though. His Site: http://www.maceo.com/ He's so good and so important, I'm going long with the tunes (I can't imagine my musical life without him):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_0alsFnxwI << always, ALWAYS Trombone Shorty sitting in...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGWnx7M41q8 << Tough to think of anybody else who can sustain the excitement for 17+ minutes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5CdUpKGbuc << from his 3rd stint with JB

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ydO760mtWgA << strong tune
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGVxjDAgAZI << All the basics right here--some of the comments have rough language

A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson
What he said. Amen, Bro--JazzboCR
