I don't listen to electronic music often and don't even know exactly how it's supposed to sound or what makes it electronic style as supposed to alternative or pop. give me some examples of electronic bands i might already know and/or some i need to know. i really would like to learn more about this style. what would be good transition music to this from metal and rock? please help me learn more!!

Well first there aren't many "bands". Because electronic music is mostly programmed and not played live it doesn't require as many people to make it. It is usually made by individuals and sometimes by duos. These people are referred to as "producers" or just "artists". The music is produced, not played. Then there are DJs, those that bring the live element to electronic music by mixing the music for clubs and raves. Sometimes a DJ is also a producer.

Some of the best known electronic acts are Moby, the Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Portishead, DJ Shadow, Fatboy Slim and the Crystal Method. All of these acts made their name in the 90's or early '00's. There really aren't that many popular new electronic artists that I can think of. All of those that I mentioned are an easy transition from metal or rock. They all make albums and songs.

Making full length albums and songs with the traditional verse- chorus - verse structure is actually a little rare in electronic music. It is largely single based. And (in part) because the songs are not usually based around lyrics they are not structured to support the verse.

I don't want to ramble on for too long. I hope that helps.
