It's doubtful the Beatles would have gotten as far as they did as fast without that tortured soul, Brian Epstein. Some huge mistakes on the business side and when they hit, was out-classed by the situation but big props for what he did do. In belated recognition of his induction into the R&R Hall of Fame, there's this appreciation from a paper's biz section:

sorry, this one must have got passed my radar when originally posted....
i agree Jazzy that without Brian.....
another who took The Beatles to their heights was, without a doubt, their producer George Martin, who had the foresight to see the possibilities that nothing is impossible in a recording studio....
he also had the innitiative and determination to create sounds and aural images no-one had discovered previously in the music industry...
so, without George and Brian the Beatles would probably have not been the studio band they became...
that said, they sure had the talent as a group and as writers to be hugely successful whoever managed and produced them....
and i doubt "sgt peppers" would have been the album it was without George Martin at the helm...
George inspired The Beatles to 'think outside the box' and The Beatles(john and paul inparticular) came up with ideas that George was only too willing to explore.
it was a meeting of people that rarely happens in music, and those meetings are magical to say the least.

To me it cuts like this: Brian Epstein was an excellent mid-tier manager and both he and the Beatles mutually benefited; George Martin was a genius who facilitated genius. You could not have made book on these interactions happening--odds of a bazillion to 1; they and we have this odds-ignoring marvelocity for the ages.

Don't know that much about Epstein but I had a book by George Martin once. A very clever man indeed. A lot of current studio techniques came about as a result of his experimentation.

Here's a tid-bit-stuffed article about Sir George:
