^^Ok then MH – I listened. There certainly is no intermission! Phew! Got halfway and had to have a break from the unremitting intensity. No wonder the release is dotted with seconds long pieces – much needed punctuation. Hmmm – I’m admiring of anyone who puts a ten-minute song out there, never mind two of them, plus one of eight minutes, and all on one album! I think she and Andrew Bird are of a similar musical idiom (he’s a tad more svelte and a lot more melodic), and listening to the music and the words, there is no doubt at all that the lady has knowhow. I found a few of the musical interludes and snatches quite charming – almost chamber music-like sections at times, and her words are engaging – she’s clever - has the overall feel of a magnum opus.
I wouldn’t seek out the album though as it’s not listening pleasure for me and that is primarily what I’m after – don’t wanna have to do too much self-examination/be preached at, and I would rather read what she’s singing – it’s too prose-like for me - too staged almost (not sure I know exactly what I mean, lol!). Not that I mind music that makes me think (quite the opposite) but it must speak to me, first and foremost, and it doesn’t, much.
