A minute... - Myles Smith - Mellope Album Review

OVERVIEW:

Every single on this album works, but it feels like Myles never pushes himself to go out of his limits, and his sound feels the same for every song but just higher/lower pitched. This was an enjoyable listen, but as expected, he reached the bar of "alright album" and didn't go for anything more. Everything here has a meaning and a reason that resonates with a lot of people, which I do like, and the use of instrumentals with Myle's voice is a small push forward, but this fails to scream "amazing album" and would just be better off as singles. The whole pop-folk genre is something I believe that he will never master, but hopefully we can see better in the future! I do think this album does have a lot of positivity, though, such as lyrically, it's well written and heartfelt, and the production and mixing backs of the songs are good; it's just that this doesn't have too much to it.
TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW

Track 1: Nice to meet you, Myles Smith

The swing on this was nice, and the timing between each part was great, but it's not anything super out of the ordinary for Myles, who seems to find anything new from him as an artist. It uses the catchy "woah-oooo-oooo" line, which I'm not surprised he's using, but it does eventually start to feel overused. And down to Myles vocals, they're good, but I don't think they fit a lot of the songs bases well, and even bended does not make it sound amazing. The end of the story is that I don't think he can sing on a song that's remembered forever, and FYI, 'Stargazing' is not one of them. Despite me going a little harsh on Myles there, he definitely has potential to make use of a viral push; I'm never saying never! And due to the new EP, this could make a charting appearance.

Track 2: Stargazing (6/10)

Now I like Stargazing, but it's gotten overplayed, but it still naturally has that feel-good energy while making a meaningful song, which I highly appreciate! This goes well as a folk-pop song, but the pop takes over more and leads it to sound made for tiktok and the radio. It's positive shine is what makes this music standout for some, and the chorus resembles this well. What made me first play this again was the bounce and the feeling of being with someone, which stood out to me from other songs due to the high pitch.

Track 3: Waste Ft. James Bay (6/10)

This was a lower-pitched, more emotional pop track. Myles and James voices bonded well on a song, and James voice felt like it brung a unique touch to the album as a whole. On a bad side, this did have a lot of flavour for the instrumentals but felt toned down and weaker when there could've been more life in the song.

Track 4: Wait For You (5.5/10)

This sounded like Myles Smith's past song 'Stargazing' but without the more booming production and mixing instead this goes for more of a meaningful story of waiting for someone with a melody that can carry the song but fails to be like his biggest song. It's more of a lighter version of 'Stargazing' without the massive vocal changes.

Track 5: Whisper (6.5/10)

'Whisper' is a song that works in many ways, and even the solo instrumental parts held up the song; it gives a lighter, warmer touch. I see why this is pushed before the full album because it really brings out character while showcasing a new side of the album.
Track 6: 3am (6/10)

3am is about someone being gone who you deeply love and not being able to get over it. I wish Myles had more intensity in the way he sings, but this still sounded pretty good; it describes what it's trying to do well and has a solid reason to come back to. The violin was a bold choice to add in for Myles, and even if it was slightly, it really gave the song a boost when it was needed to and shaped the track.

Track 7: Little By Little (6/10)

The energy for this was a nice slowdown for the end of the album; the spirit was in depth and tender, which conveyed the feeling of losing love. This was not the best ending, but it certainly was a bad one! And this doesn't sound like something made for social media and rather more something from the heart.

BEST: 'Whisper'
WORST: 'Wait For You'
FINAL SCORE: 5.5/10
