The ridiculous success of 50 Cent in early 2003 opened the floodgates for other street-level, mixtape-bred rappers, one of whom was Joe Budden, a Jersey City rapper with a distinct loose-cannon style molded from years of freestyling. Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in Queens, Budden came of age across the Hudson River in Jersey City, which he proudly continued to rep in his rhymes despite its somewhat unsavory reputation relative to more traditional hip-hop breeding grounds like Harlem, Brooklyn, the South Bronx, and Queensbridge. Following some troubled teenage years, Budden cleaned himself up and focused his sights on hip-hop fame. He teamed up with producer Dub-B (aka White Boy) and began making demos, one of which ended up in the hands of DJ Clue.
Soon afterward, Budden was a mixtape fixture, freestyling over popular beats on mixes by New York's leading DJs, most notably Clue, DJ Kayslay, and Cutmaster C. In particular, his "Grindin'" freestyle turned heads, as did one of his White Boy productions, "Focus." It wasn't long before Budden joined On Top management and went to work with Just Blaze, one of New York's hottest producers of the moment, best known for his work with Jay-Z but also respected for his sure-fire freelance work, such as Erick Sermon's "React" and Cam'ron's "Oh Boy." Indeed, a sure-fire hit resulted: "Pump It Up," a club-ready track that connected everywhere, from MTV to the streets. While all of this was going down, industry heavyweight Def Jam signed Budden and prepared his self-titled debut album, which charted well its opening week, earned some critical support, and foreshadowed a bright future for the refreshingly unique rapper.
Unfortunately, a changing of the guard at Def Jam meant the executives who had signed Budden were gone. His next album would remain in limbo until late 2008 when the Halfway House mixtape arrived with an announcement that the rapper had signed with Amalgam Digital. A year later fans were greeted with a flurry of activity, beginning in February when his album Padded Room landed in stores. Featuring Budden with Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, and Royce da 5'9", the self-titled album from the hip-hop supergroup Slaughterhouse followed in August, and then he returned to his solo career in October with Escape Route. In 2010 his mixtape series Mood Music graduated from the underground when the eOne label released Mood Muzik, Vol. 4: A Turn for the Worst.

Joe Budden is a true enigma. Weâre talking about a artist who hasnât had an album on a major label since his debut album 7 years ago on Def Jam, yet he holds the record for selling out SOBâs the fastest over acts like the Roots, B.o.B and Drake. Weâre talking about an artist who has had no major money behind him for promotion but his Joebuddentv.com site gets SO much traffic, that his girlfriend at the time Tahiry went from being a virtual nobody to gracing the cover of King Magazine. Weâre talking about an artist whose Mood Muzik mixtape series has become so popular that the newest installment on deck Mood Muzik 4 was one of the most anticipated releases of 2010. Weâre talking about an artist that can do something that 90% of cats in the industry canât doâ¦make good music.
Truth be told, I was never a Joe Budden fan. I thought money was wack. My man Esco would always try to tell me about Joe and Iâd always be like âthat wack dude with that Pump It Up Song?â Then one day me, Esco and my man Keon went to this show at Sonar in Baltimore in 2008. The spot was damn near empty while Big Shug and Termanolgy did their thing, and then when they announced Joe Buddens was coming to the stage I swear to you 200 people magically appeared outta nowhere! And during Joeâs set, he had the entire audience in the palm of his hand! Cats knew EVERY SINGLE WORD of EVERY SINGLE SONG! Now for people who know me, KNOW Iâm a hip hop purist in every form of the word. I live, breath and bleed this culture and for me to be at a hip hop show and feel left out felt like back in the day when you and your peoples would go to a house party in your hood and youâd be the only dude to not pull a girl!
His set was so crazy, after the show Esco and Keonâs voices were hoarse because they had been rapping with Joe the entire night! As soon as I got back to the crib at 3am I was on the net downloading any and everything on Joe Buddens, so I could be down too. And after really getting into Joeâs catalogue, I see exactly what Esco had been trying to school me on for a minute, which is this dude Joe Buddens is a PROBLEM!
Now, before I get into Mood Muzik 4 let me start by saying if you want some coke rap or a mc lying talking about a bunch of nuthinâ¦this album ainât for you. Now, with that being said, the review of MM4 is easy because the albumâs incredible! There are so many great moments on Mood Muzik 4 that the best way to truly do it justice is to give a collage of the many quotable Joe offers you to digest.
âI tell em Iâm just looking for some peace of mind, but they say Iâm only working with a piece of mind.â (âPray For Meâ)
âClass is in session and look whoâs come to tutor, they passing the fake off like the real like Brian Pumperâs jeweler.â (âAftermathâ)
âSo through all my resistance, Iâm afraid this 2 year old can already see the difference, he sees you donât provide when you capable, why we donât fix things while weâre still able to.â (âRole Reversalâ)
âI donât call âem verses, theyâre similar to poems, similar to scriptures, similar to pictures, you can stick to rap, what weâre doing is much bigger.â (âCome Alongâ)
âMental distraught ever word from this sinister boss, is brought to you by the people, like your ministerâs porsche.â (âSober Upâ w/Crooked I)
âI say it loud hoping someone can hear me clearly, trying to make my girl get it she didnât know that itâs very scary, but sheâs a nympho, she can be barely near me, sheâll still want the god in her, think she Mary Mary.â (âBlack Cloudâ)
Trust, MM4 doesnât disappoint in any sense of the word whether youâre a diehard Joe Budden fan or a newcomer to his madness. Itâs funny, cause now when I try to tell cats about Joe, I sound just like Esco did 3 years ago trying to tell me about him and they give me the exact same âthat wack dude from that Pump it Up song?â line. But I know where theyâre coming from so I canât trip, but until you give Joe a chance youâre not only missing out on some great hip hop, but youâll never understand why to me, heâs the best rapper alive.
