Killings in the States
#11
The problem here is to seriously address mental illness !...you'll never get rid of guns..that's not realistic!...ban the assault rifle ...yes indeed ! No one needs that to protect their home!

Being a father and grandfather I am sickened by the shootings!

I agree with you SteveO. We must create more efficient places where we can help people with some major mental problems. I mean we got to do something about it.

I agree with you 100%.

I also want to say something about the 'autism link' I am the mother of a 16 year old autistic son and he is no more aggressive than any other 16 year old boy. People with autism are in fact IMO less likely to do something like this. They are very rigid about rules and laws etc. However you can be both autistic and mentally ill just like anybody else can be mentally ill. So.....yes we need to address the help there is for the mentally ill. I know how difficult it is for people to get treated properly for any mental disorder in the U.S. and I know the stigma attached is not encouraging anyone to get help.

I am very upset over this whole thing. I go back and forth between sadness and anger. I cannot imagine losing a child and even worse in such a horrific way. I am also really concerned about the surviving children who have been through this. My heart is with all who have been affected.

i was sickened when i picked up the paper yesterday(monday) and to see pictures of all the victims adourn the front page....its even more horrifying when you actually see the 'people' instead of the 'numbers' of victims...

its certainly going to be a bleak Christmas in that town, actually got a feeling Christmas will be cancelled in many households over there as the WHOLE town is affected by this senseless masacre,
again, my thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by this tragedy...gut wrenching stuff indeed!

Adam Lanza was a special case. Well at least that his mom said of him. I heard one story where she told a babysitter not let him alone because he had some rage problems.

His mother should have seeked professional help for him but as Trace said the social stigma attached to mental illness is so prevalent that she was discouraged and ashamed to get him treated! It appears to me that Newtown is a very closely knit community (population 27,000) so everybody would pretty much know everybody's business...I guess Lanza fell between the cracks ...it's a sad and troubling situation overall. The community possibly simply labelled him as "odd".
