i read the article SteveO....
sounds like somehting McCartney would write about himself or Beatles IMO....
and im not taking anything away from their popularity or greatness but,

Elvis ticked all those boxes in 1956!
also he had a worldwide viewing audience(estimated) of one billion people for his "aloha in hawaii" concert in 1973, that was half the world's population back then.
his funeral attracted more people to Graceland/Memphis than John's also...
the only funeral that attracted more people, with a bigger outpouring of sadness was Princess Diana's.

Marvelous piece--thanks for sharing. The point of it was that they were trail-blazers in a unique time. That Elbow Parsley concert happened nearly a decade later, and may not have been possible (the worldwide reach) if not for the Beatles. Also he's not that well known as a songwriter and that was an unspoken coda here too--the Beatles may have gotten their start as a cover band but soon broke the stranglehold that the Brill Building folks and others had on both writing songs and owning all the rights to them, and controlling their careers. EP was excellent at everything he did as a singer; they were paramount, sui generis, in all they touched and can't imagine anything like them or the times again.
A man accustomed to hear only the echo of his own sentiments, soon bars all the common avenues of delight, and has no part in the general gratification of mankind--Dr. Johnson

i wasnt criticisng The Beatles...im a big fan of them, own all their studio albums and some bootleg material also...
own all of McCartney's, half of John and George's solo material and three or four of Ringo's albums...

they changed the way writers wrote songs for sure with the structure of their songs and 'real lyrics'(after 1965) instead of the stock standard "love, love me do","she loves you yeh yeh yeh"
lyrics that were part of R+R from 1956 onwards.

albums lik "rubber soul","revolver" and "sgt peppers" changed the musical landscape forever and showed musicians what could be achieved with a bit of imagination.

but as John Lennon once said.....before Elvis there was nothing!....

the funny thing is, as im writing these posts here, i am wearing a Beatles t-shirt....LMAO!

another thing people forget,or dont realise-especially non UK'ers, is that the UK was still in ruin after WWII in the early 1960s,
lots of poverty, lack of food, especially fresh fruit...
the emergance of The Beatles brought hope and happiness to a nation obliterated by war almost two decades previously.
they, and artists like Stones,Kinks,Who came along at a time when England needed 'something' to untie the country.

back to the aftermath of WWII...
my dad often tells me that he didnt see a Banana until the mid 1960s and wasnt sure if they were eating cat instead of rabbitt at that time also because they look the same when skinned in a butchers' shop, and that The Beatles brought 'hope' to a disolusioned generation of teens.
