bio

Heavy metal quartet Mudvayne formed in Peoria, IL, in 1996, its members adopting the unusual pseudonyms sPaG (M. McDonough) (drums), Gurrg (G. Tribbett) (guitar), and Kud (Chad Gray) (vocals). The group's original bassist was replaced after two years by Ryknow (Ryan Martinie). During their development, the bandmembers began the practice of applying bizarre makeup. After self-releasing their first album, Kill, I Oughta, they were signed by Epic Records and recorded their major-label debut, L.D. 50, which was released in August 2000 shortly after the end of their first national tour opening for Slipknot. The album later went gold and earned Mudvayne the first-ever MTV2 Video Award at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards. Mudvayne continued touring and reissued their self-released debut EP, Kill, I Oughta, in November 2001 as The Beginning of All Things to End. A year later the band returned with its official follow-up, The End of All Things to Come, which was recorded at Minneapolis' Pachyderm Studios with Tool producer David Bottrill. With a new album came new personas, this time as space aliens. The bandmembers changed their names accordingly, taking the new monikers of Chüd (Kud), Güüg (Gurrg), R-üD (Ryknow), and Spüg (sPaG). They embarked on a European tour, arriving back stateside in July to join the Summer Sanitarium shed tour, featuring such heavyweights as Metallica and Linkin Park. In 2005, the band released Lost and Found, their third album for Epic. In September 2007, Mudvayne announced they would allow fans to vote on the band's website to determine the track selection for the compilation By the People, for the People, released the following month. The all new full-length New Game arrived in November 2008, followed six months later by an eponymous 2009 effort.

album review

Mudvayne's self-titled album is slightly heavier than 2008's The New Game, but it still features songs written in their current default mode, which is a sort of combination of Linkin Park and Tool -- churning basslines, the occasional faux-tribal rhythm, lots of angsty roaring and crooned choruses. Lyrics like "the death of love as we know it" raise serious questions about whether these guys -- and the entire nu metal generation -- are as emotionally stunted and scarred as they seem, or whether they've latched onto a schtick and can't imagine switching gears for fear of losing their share of an already diminished market. There are some surprises on Mudvayne, like a surprisingly Slash-like guitar solo on "Closer" and the death metal intro to the Slipknot-esque "I Can't Wait," but too much of it is more of the same from the band and its genre. On their second album, 2002's The End of All Things to Come, Mudvayne really seemed to be onto something, moving in the direction of progressive rock while remaining extremely heavy. But with each subsequent album, they've become harder to defend -- trawling for radio hits, and in the process sapping the power of their best stuff. "I Can't Wait" is the only song on Mudvayne that recalls the Mudvayne of old, the one that held promise. The new one is represented by almost everything else here, most egregiously the acoustic bathos of "Dead Inside" (and how clichéd is that title?). There's an entire generation of young bands making furious, cranked-up metal. Warmed-over nu metal whiners like Mudvayne need to observe the territory and sack up.

Amazing album and the black-light art very cool. Also they are making a 3 part story music video out of "Scream with me", "Beautiful And Strange" and "Heard It All Before". The music video for "Scream with me" is out now which is the third part of the whole story
I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music

although i'm one of those old fans who know they'll never make anything as good as LD, i still was overly disappointed. it sounds like hellyeah's mixing into mudvayne now. darn.
