The 4 hour workweek
#1
Hey MD,

I recently read great book called "The 4 hour workweek" by Tim Ferris, have any of you guys heard of it?

I don't really like the title, because it seems to promote laziness, but it's not like that at all. I want to say it's almost an instruction guide to 'lifestyle design'.

For those of your unfamiliar with lifestyle design- it's basically creating a lifestyle you want to live, and in many cases that means escaping the standard 9-5 workday in an office. The possibilities this book presents are endless- extended world travel, automatic income, vocations and dream jobs.

Once again, this isn't the "get rich quick book". It's more like the "get the right mindset to get what you want out of life" book, and as cheesy as it sounds- I promise you that no words I can say do it justice. I'm actually hoping to start a business pretty soon Smile I'm in the testing phase right now to make sure there's money to be made in the niche I chose.

Guys... Read this book. If not anything I said, it's a fun read.

Sounds interesting and I will investigate it but here's a word of 'advice'. The 9 to 5 can be an absolute nightmare and seem like a master/slave scenario but you do get to meet a whole lot of interesting people on the way - not to mention the dishy blue-eyed blonde that gives you sleepless nights.......that's when you look forward to the old 9 to 5. Believe me - I've been there!
Come to think of it - wish I was back there!

And anyway, if you had all the money and you were able to do whatever you wanted, at any time you wanted, what would you really do with your life? Money is like a mountain - you have to put in a lot of effort to accumulate it on the way up and then when you get to the top and you are standing on top of the mountain and you are king of the world you might find you are completely alone.

And there is no way down........

Sounds like a good read ! As far as the 9 to 5 work grind goes it isn't for everyone ! It was suitable for me because I enjoyed my work and it was good security working for the government. You need that assurance of a regular pay cheque when you're raising a young family !

The thing is though, it's not about getting rich Smile

It's an interesting concept- but he says that the main currency is time and mobility, so if you're making 50,000 dolalrs a year and working a fourth of the time you would be normally, and somebody else is working fulltime and getting 100,000- you are richer in terms of relativity.

The point of the book isn't to make money so much as it is to remove the restrictions finances impose on you. What you do after that- he suggests- should be a pursuit of a dream job for instance, or learning (that's what he did- he speaks 9 languages and knows like every sport in the world). He really advocates making less and working less if it means fulfilling dreams and having experiences with people Smile

Of course- not for everybody, but it's an empowering read nonetheless.

It's definitely a good book. I recommend it for all entrepreneurial-minded people.

Cheers,
